Until recently, Plasmodium knowlesi malaria in humans was misdiagnosed as Plasmodium malariae malaria. The objectives of the present study were to determine the geographic distribution of P. knowlesi malaria in the human population in Malaysia and to investigate 4 suspected fatal cases.Sensitive and specific nested polymerase chain reaction was used to identify all Plasmodium species present in (1) blood samples obtained from 960 patients with malaria who were hospitalized in Sarawak, Malaysian ...
Malaria is an Italian word composed of “ mala ” and “ aria,” derived from malus (bad), and aeris (air). It was first used to describe a fever (miasma), which was wrongly attributed to exposure to poisonous air rising from marshes. Although the disease had been described in the Hippocratic Collection (460 to 377 BC) and its relation to mosquitoes suggested in the 5th century AD, by the Indian physician Susruta, it was only in 1880 that Charles Laveran, a French physician working in Algeria, disco...

Acute renal failure (ARF) is seen mostly in Plasmodium falciparum infection, but P vivax and P. malariae can occasionally contribute for renal impairment. Malarial ARF is commonly found in non-immune adults and older children with falciparum malaria. Occurance of ARF in severe falciparum malaria is quite common in southeast Asia and Indian subcontinent where intensity of malaria transmission is usually low with occasional microfoci of intense transmission. Since precise mechanism of malarial ARF...
We studied 112 patients with malarial acute renal failure (ARF) during the period 1991-1997 at Bangkok Hospital for Tropical Diseases (Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand). Hemodialysis was performed in 101 (90.2%) of these patients. The mean number of times the patients were hemodialyzed was 6.5 (range = 1-27). Ninety-three (83.0%) patients were oliguric and the remainder were nonoliguric. Patients who had oliguric renal failure required more hemodialyses and had more complications than the n...

To identify clinical and laboratory features of patients with malarial hepatitis simulating fulminant hepatic failure (MHsFHF) and distinguish it from viral FHF.At a tertiary care unit in Bangalore, India, we compared clinical and laboratory characteristics of 25 patients with MHsFHF with those of 25 patients with viral FHF from November 1996 to January 2000.No statistically significant differences were seen in duration of jaundice, altered consciousness, and the interval between onset of jaundi...
