Abstract
Abstract Inflammation and the pro-inflammatory cytokines are associated with numerous chronic diseases. Studies suggest that flavonoids, plant polyphenolic compound derivatives from natural origin, have a wide range of putative biological activities. Similar to other flavonoids, chrysin (CH) by its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects is a potential prophylactic agent in immunopathological and physicochemical injuries. This is an overview on putative immunomodulatory activities of flavonoids and beneficial health effects of these substances particularly, CH in the immune system. CH possesses potent immune-protective effects and suppresses inflammation in innate immune system which results to avoid damages induced by neutrophils and macrophages and suppresses immuno-inflammatory responses. Furthermore, beneficial effects of chrysin on inhibition of serum levels nuclear transcription factor κB (NF-κB) p65 unit, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-12, IL-17A, interferon gamma (IFN-γ) was reported. Moreover, CH has been known as the antagonist of NF-kB and the agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) which in down regulation of the key pro-inflammatory enzymes such as myeloperoxidase (MPO), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), phospholipase A2, and prostanoids. Therefore, CH can improve immune system and neurodegenerative diseases. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in compound derivatives from natural origin. Taken together, evidences show that flavonoids may have health-promoting and disease-preventing dietary compounds with important benefits in modern life styles.

Uveitis is a common cause of blindness worldwide. Experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) is an animal model of noninfectious uveitis. Chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone) is a member of the flavonoid family and has anti-inflammatory effects. We immunized C57BL/6J mice with human interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein peptide 1–20 to induce EAU. Chrysin was administered intragastrically at 25 mg/kg daily to the chrysin-treated mice from 3 days before immunization to 21 days after immunization. Vehi...

ABSTRACTAlthough doxorubicin (DOX) is among the most widely used anticancer agents, its clinical application is hampered owing to its cardiotoxicity. Adjuvant therapy with an antioxidant has been suggested as a promising strategy to reduce DOX-induced adverse effects. In this context, many phenolic compounds have been reported to protect against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. The cardioprotective effects of phenolic compounds are exerted via multiple mechanisms including inhibition of reactive oxyg...

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the intestine that compromises the patients’ life quality and requires sustained pharmacological and surgical treatments. Since their etiology is not completely understood, non-fully-efficient drugs have been developed and those that have shown effectiveness are not devoid of quite important adverse effects that impair their long-term use. In this regard, a growing body of evidence confirms the health benefits of flavon...

Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disorder and progresses mainly due to airway remodeling. Chrysin, a natural flavonoid, has been reported to possess multiple biologic activities, including anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation and anti-proliferation. The present study aimed to investigate whether chrysin could relieve allergic airway inflammation and remodeling in a murine model of chronic asthma and the mechanism involved. The female BALB/c mice sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA)...

Abstract The phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of Uvaria flexuosa (Annonaceae) leaves led to the isolation of seven compounds including, 3-methyl-4,5-dihydro-oxepine (flexuvaroxepine A), four polyoxygenated seco-cyclohexene (flexuvarin A–D) and two polyoxygenated cyclohexene (flexuvarol A–B) derivatives, together with four known flavones. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using different spectroscopic techniques. A plausible biogenetic route of the new ...

Abstract In this study, the effect of Chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone), an important member of the flavonoid family, on memory impairment, oxidative stress and BDNF reduction generated by aging in mice were investigated. Young and aged mice were treated daily per 60 days with Chrysin (1 and 10 mg/kg; per oral, p.o.) or veichle (10 ml/kg; p.o.). Mice were trained and tested in Morris Water Maze task. After the behavioural test, the levels of reactive species (RS), the activity of superoxide dismuta...

Abstract Interleukin 17 (IL-17) includes several cytokines among which IL-17A is considered as one of the major pro-inflammatory cytokine being central to the innate and adaptive immune responses. IL-17 is produced by unconventional T cells, members of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), mast cells, as well as typical innate immune cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages located in the epithelial barriers and characterised by a rapid response to infectious agents by recruiting neutrophils as first ...

Myofibroblasts play critical roles in the development of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis by depositing components of extracellular matrix. One source of lung myofibroblasts is thought to be alveolar epithelial type 2 cells that undergo epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). Rat RLE-6TN alveolar epithelial type 2 cells treated with transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) are converted into myofibroblasts through EMT. TGF-β induces both canonical Smad signaling and non-canonical signaling, includin...

Abstract Recent reports imply that drug delivery approaches aimed to modulate the phenotypic and functional switching of macrophages towards anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotypes have a great regenerative potential in wound healing. Therefore, the present work was designed to reveal the effectiveness of a nanofiber (NF)-based drug delivery system incorporated with a natural immunomodulatory agent, Chrysin (CHR) to repolarize RAW264.7 macrophage cells from M1 to M2 phenotype. In this regard, CHR-poly...

Natural products and especially flavonoids are a prominent alternative source of anticancer agents that can be used as ligands for the generation of new bioactive complexes with metal ions of known‏ biochemical and pharmacological activities. Herein we present the synthesis and detailed structural and physicochemical characterization ...

Background Acute diarrhea is still a common and serious disease. The causes of acute diarrhea are very complicated. Therefore, we need to find a medicine to control diarrhea symptoms, save time for diagnosis of pathogens, and prevent drug abuse. Ellagic acid (EA), a natural polyphenol drug, has anti-diarrhea effects. However, the action mechanisms of EA for non-specific diarrhea have not been characterized.
