Abstract Polysaccharides (AJP) were prepared from Apostichopus japonicus by protease hydrolysis method. Antioxidant activity in vitro and antihyperlipidemic activity in vivo was investigated. Chemical composition analysis indicated that AJP was mainly composed of glucosamine, galactosamine, glucuronic acid, mannose, glucose, galactose and fucose, with an average molecular weight of about 36.2 kDa. The antioxidant capacities of AJP were, respectively, evaluated by the assays of scavenging DPPH, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, and reducing power in vitro . It showed potent free radical scavenging activities and reducing power. Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) decreased significantly and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) increased significantly after treatment of hyperlipidemic Wistar rats with AJP. These results suggest that AJP may prove to be a potential candidate of the natural antioxidants as a therapeutic agent for hyperlipidemia.

In this study, high sulfate content ulvan (HU) was prepared with sulfur trioxide/N,N-dimethylformamide (SO3-DMF) in formamide, and the antihyperlipidemic activity of ulvan and HU in mice was determined. Obvious differences in antihyperlipidemic activity between natural ulvan and HU were observed, moreover, the antihyperlipidemic activity of HU-fed 250 mg/kg was the strongest, compared to natural ulvan fed group, triglyceride (TG) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations wer...

Abstract A homogeneous exopolysaccharide, designated As1-1, was obtained from the culture medium of the mangrove endophytic fungus Aspergillus sp. Y16 and purified by anion-exchange and gel-permeation chromatography. Results of chemical and spectroscopic analyses, including one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1D and 2D NMR) spectroscopy showed that As1-1 was mainly composed of mannose with small amounts of galactose, and that its molecular weight was about 15 kDa. The backbone o...

Abstract Recently, a great deal of interest has been developed to isolate novel bioactive compounds from marine resources because of their numerous health beneficial effects. Among marine resources, marine algae are valuable sources of structurally diverse bioactive compounds. The cell walls of marine algae are rich in sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) such as fucoidans in brown algae, carrageenans in red algae and ulvans in green algae. These SPs exhibit many beneficial biological activities such ...

Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is a fish widely inhabiting rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps and rice fields in China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries. It is edible and can be used to treat xiao ke (namely diabetic) in traditional Chinese medicine. Polysaccharides from M. anguillicaudatus (MAPs) were extracted and separated into four parts which were named MAP I, MAP II MAP III and MAP IV, respectively. The percentage of polysaccharide in dry weight is about 3.06%. Hydroxyl radical and superoxide ...

Neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) exhibit therapeutic potential in neuronal diseases. Previously, we reported that a sulfated polysaccharide (HS) from the sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus increased the proliferation of NSPCs. Since the formation of neurospheres is related with NSPCs proliferation, we investigated the mechanism leading to neurosphere formation with and without HS. The results showed that HS significantly promoted neurosphere formation in a dose-dependent manner at concentratio...

Abstract Prunella vulgaris polysaccharides (PVPs) have a variety of biological activities, but the mechanism and extent of their anti-hyperlipidaemic effect remain unclear. In vitro, PVPs had a significant inhibitory effect on angiotensin (Ang II)-induced vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation. A metabolomics approach based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and chemometrics was established in this study to evaluate the anti-hyperlipidaemic activity of PVPs in a high-fat S...

Echinoderms are a source of a broad range of secondary metabolites with a large variety of bioactive properties. Although pigment and lipid derivatives are the major groups of bioactive compounds found in crinoids and ophiuroids, saponins represent the most abundant and diverse marine natural products (MNPs) in the phylum Echinodermata. This review is for researchers that are interested in MNPs derived from echinoderms, but with a particular focus on the structural diversity and biological funct...

The aim of this study was to elucidate the effect and the underlying mechanism of glycosaminoglycan from Apostichopus japonicus (AHG) on hepatic glucose production (HGP) in insulin resistance hepatocytes. Insulin resistance was induced with high glucose (HG) for 24 h in primary hepatocytes. The results showed that AHG exhibited hypoglycemic activity at relatively low concentration (1 μg/mL) and revealed non-toxic activity to insulin resistance hepatocytes even at 500 μg/mL concentration. HGP tes...
