Abstract This study explores the influence of functionalization process of cellulosic structure on its mechanical and comfort properties. Chitosan hydrogel has been synthetized and applied on cellulosic fabric to impart pH-sensitivity and antimicrobial behavior. The hydrogel bounded rate onto the surface was enhanced by a previous chemical activation of cotton fabric. Antimicrobial behavior was confirmed by investigation of the antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Listeria monocyto...

Abstract Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has many advantages over plant cellulose, which make it widely used in many fields, especially in the food industry. In this study, three strains including BCA263, BCC529, and P1 were selected for characteristics analysis of BNCs under static and agitated culture conditions. The BNCs produced under static culture condition were in the shape of uniform membrane, while BNCs produced under agitated culture were in form of small agglomerates and fragments. BCA2...
Abstract Chicken feather peptone (CFP) derived from poultry waste is a rich source of essential minerals and amino acids. This, along with suitable carbon source, can be used as a low cost complex supplemental nutrient source for microbial fermentation. In the present work, CFP blended with sucrose was evaluated for the production of levan using Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441. Amount of CFP added to the medium significantly influenced levan production and it was found that at a concentration 2 g/L, ...

Abstract Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) possesses a dual function of anticoagulation and anti-inflammation. While the structures and mechanisms on its anticoagulation have been widely studied, the structural features responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of LMWH remain to be explored. In the present study, guided by an anti-inflammation assay, a non-anticoagulant species was generated from partial desulfation of LMWH to fully retain the anti-inflammatory activity, from which five f...

Abstract Certain polysaccharides can serve as bio-active natural polymers that provide health benefits, however their complex structures tend to induce dramatically different activities. In this work, the immunomodulatory activity of the two arabinogalactans from larch was investigated, based upon comparison of native arabinogalactans and those modified to have lesser quantities of side-chain paraphernalia. Various in vitro assays demonstrated that the native arabinogalactans increased the secre...

ABSTRACT Poor buffering capacity of chitosan (CS) results in insufficient intracellular gene release which poses the major barrier in gene delivery. Herein, we reconstructed pristine CS with propylamine (PA), (diethylamino) propylamine (DEAPA), and N, N-dimethyl- dipropylenetriamine (DMAMAPA) to obtain a series of alkylamine-chitosan (AA-CS). The introduction of multiple amino groups with rational ratios functionally enhance the buffering capacity of AA-CS, among which DMAPAPA-CS showed bufferin...

Abstract A gel delivery system was developed in the present work using whey protein isolate and lotus root amylopectin via regulating pH. The texture, thermodynamics, rheology and microstructure of gels were evaluated. Results showed that pH at 7.0 induced a more compact and stable gel structure than other pH. The composite gel formed at pH 7.0 was accordingly employed to encapsulate vitamin D3. Results exhibited that the encapsulation of composite gel of whey protein isolate and lotus root amyl...

Abstract Thiolated chitosan (CS-NAC) was synthesized and the selected CS-NAC was used together with silk fibroin (SF) to produce dual network CS-NAC/SF hydrogels. The CS-NAC/SF solutions with formulated compositions were able to form hydrogels at physiological temperature and pH. Rheological measurements showed that elastic modulus of some CS-NAC/SF gels could reach around 3 kPa or higher and was much higher than their respective viscous modulus, indicating that they behaved like strong gels. De...

Abstract An in vitro digestibility protocol was used to elucidate the role of different emulsifying polysaccharides particles on the lipid digestion rate of oil-in-water Pickering emulsions. Emulsions stabilized by cellulose crystals (CCrys), cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), chitosan particles and a conventional emulsifier (Tween 80) were evaluated concerning microstructure, droplet size, zeta potential and free fatty acids released during digestion. After gastric step, the high positive charge of c...

Abstract Cutaneous chronic wounds are characterized by an impaired wound healing which may lead to infection. To surmount this problem, a novel quaternary ammonium chitosan nanoparticles (TMC NPs)/chitosan (CS)composite sponge with asymmetric wettability surfaces was successfully prepared. The optimum concentrations of TMC NPs and CS were 0.2 mg/mL and 2.0%, respectively. The incorporated TMC NPs could improve the antibacterial activity of the CS sponge. Asymmetric modification enables the CS sp...
