Abstract
Salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia remain major obstacles after radiation of head and neck cancers. There is large unmet need for new treatment strategies as only insufficient symptomatic therapies exits. The randomized controlled MESRIX-trial indicates that autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (ASCs) can safely restore function of the irradiated submandibular glands in former oropharynx cancer patients.
