BACKGROUND.: Frailty is an age-related clinical syndrome of decreased resilience to stressors and is associated with numerous adverse outcomes. Although there is preponderance of literature on frailty in developed countries, limited investigations have been conducted in less developed regions including China-a country that has the world's largest aging population. We examined frailty prevalence in China by socio-demographics and geographic region, and investigated correlates of frailty. METHODS....

Background: We currently still lack valid methods to dynamically measure resilience for stressors before the appearance of adverse health outcomes that hamper well-being. Quantifying an older adult’s resilience in an early stage would aid complex decision-making in health care. Translating complex dynamical systems theory to humans, we hypothesized that three dynamical indicators of resilience (variance, temporal autocorrelation, and cross-correlation) in time series of self-rated physical, ment...

Abstract Objectives To characterize factors contributing to physical resilience in older cancer survivors, as demonstrated by resistance to decline or recovery (resilience). Materials and Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial of cancer survivors ≥ 65 years old and ≥ 5 years from cancer diagnoses. Physical function was assessed quarterly over 2 years, with Short-Form 36 physical function subscale. Participants with ≥ 2 follow-up assessments (n = 594)...

Objectives To investigate the association between mortality and heritability of a rescaled Fried frailty index, the Scale of Aging Vigor in Epidemiology (SAVE), to determine its value for genetic analyses. Design Longitudinal, community-based cohort study. Setting The Long Life Family Study (LLFS) in the United States and Denmark. Participants Long-lived individuals (N = 4,875, including 4,075 genetically related individuals) and their families (N = 551). Measurements The SAVE was administered t...

Objectives To ascertain whether older adults with extensive disease but relative vigor (adapters) shorten the period at the end of life in which they live with morbidity (compress morbidity). Design Prospective, community-based cohort study in four U.S. cities. Setting Cardiovascular Health Study. Participants Individuals aged 65 and older. Measurements Participants were categorized into three groups according to extent of disease (assessed noninvasively), vigor, and frailty (expected agers (n =...

Resilience has been described in the psychosocial literature as the capacity to maintain or regain well-being during or after adversity. Physical resilience is a newer concept that is highly relevant to successful aging. Our objective was to characterize the emerging construct of resilience as it pertains to physical health in older adults, and to identify gaps and opportunities to advance research in this area.We conducted a systematic review to identify English language papers published throug...

Objectives To determine the association between hearing impairment (HI) and risk and duration of hospitalization in community-dwelling older adults in the United States. Design Prospective observational study. Setting Health, Aging and Body Composition Study. Participants Well-functioning community-dwelling white and black Medicare beneficiaries aged 70 to 79 at study enrollment in 1997–98 were followed for a median of 12 years. Measurements Incidence, annual rate, and duration of hospitalizatio...
