Summary Chitin is generally considered to be present in centric diatoms but not in pennate species. Many aspects of chitin biosynthetic pathways have not been explored in diatoms. We retrieved chitin metabolic genes from pennate ( Phaeodactylum tricornutum ) and centric ( Thalassiosira pseudonana ) diatom genomes.
