Abstract
Abstract This paper proposes an Energy Modulation strategy (MODEN) which allows the PV inverters efficiency to be incremented in low input power condition. The key element is the utilization of an ultracapacitors bank as energy regulation transitory element: in low irradiance condition, the energy coming from the PV array is not converted immediately, but temporary stored to be converted at a power regime in which the inverter may have maximum yield. In this paper the simulator developed, the guidelines for the MODEN system design optimization, and the simulation results, are described. It is also described the prototype fabricated and installed in a PV plant, and its performance evaluated.

In recent decades, Photovoltaic (PV) energy has made significant progress towards meeting the continuously increasing world energy demand. Besides that, the issue of conventional fossil fuels depletion as well as environmental pollution both contribute to the growth of PV technology. However, the deployment and implementation of photovoltaic systems remain as a great challenge, since the PV material cost is still very high. The low PV module conversion efficiency is another factor that restricts...

Abstract In this paper, two different PV arrays have been simulated in order to quantify the electrical mismatch loss in each one of them. The simulations have been performed both in the standard condition (STC) and in the dynamic conditions which implement the meteorological data from the two different locations. Two methods have been applied to calculate the mismatch losses. The first one (the simplified method) assumes that all modules are at the tolerance limit and the second one (the I–V cu...

A photovoltaic (PV) array has non-linear I–V (current–voltage) characteristics and its output power varies with solar insolation level and ambient temperature. There exists only one point, called maximum power point (MPP), on the P–V (power–voltage) curve, where power is maximum and this point varies with the changing atmospheric conditions. Moreover, energy conversion efficiency of PV module is very low and mismatch between source and load characteristics causes significant power losses. Conseq...

Partial shading of PV arrays reduces the energy yield of PV systems and the arrays exhibit multiple peaks in the P-V characteristics. The losses due to partial shading are not proportional to the shaded area but depend on the shading pattern, array configuration and the physical location of shaded modules in the array. This paper presents a technique to configure the modules in the array so as to enhance the generated power from the array under partial shading conditions. In this approach, the p...

Several feed-in tariffs are now available for photovoltaic (PV) systems, and thus, the maximization of the productivity is very important; this goal can be achieved by solar cell technologies with high efficiency and low temperature losses, one axis or dual axis sun-tracking systems, proper cooling techniques for PV modules in building integrated applications, master-slave (M-S) control for the inverters in large grid-connected PV plants, etc. About the last item, this paper deals with the advis...

Abstract Reconfigurable architectures are of great interest to system designers to improve the system’s operation and efficiency. In this paper, we propose an adaptive utility interactive photovoltaic (PV) system based on a novel Flexible Switch array Matrix topology. This proposed system maximizes the generated power in real-time in response to operational conditions such as shading, soiling, mismatches, and module failure among others. The proposed system is a compromise in the utilization of ...

Here, we will first briefly summarize the general principles of QD synthesis using our previous work on InP as an example. Then we will focus on QDs of the IV-VI Pb chalcogenides (PbSe, PbS, and PbTe) and Si QDs because these were among the first QDs that were reported to produce multiple excitons upon absorbing single photons of appropriate energy (a process we call multiple exciton generation (MEG)). We note that in addition to Si and the Pb-VI QDs, two other semiconductor systems (III-V InP Q...

The unique wide bandgap properties of SiC allow the creation of high performance normally-off vertical JFET power device. Due to the vertical nature of the device, it can easily be designed with blocking capability exceeding 2kV with R DS(ON), sp > 3mΩ-cm2, resulting in the lowest specific on-resistance for enhancement mode SiC devices with V BR DS(ON), sp yields a small die size that translates into switching losses that are 5–10X smaller than similarly rated Si IGBTs. When used as an IGBT repl...

Partial shading of photovoltaic (PV) modules can affect a wide variety of plants ranging from utility-sized solar trackers to residential building-integrated PV, resulting in lower energy production yields. The traditional series-parallel interconnection scheme of solar arrays is sensitive to disparate solar irradiation levels on modules of the plant. By using alternative topologies, the effects of unavoidable partial shade can be decreased. In this paper, module interconnections inside a PV arr...

Abstract Electrochemical energy storage plays a major rule in the current shift to renewable energy sources in the form of batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. This work represents the fabrication of supercapacitor electrodes comprised of activated carbon powder (ACP) and graphene oxide (GOx) drop-casted onto graphite substrates. ACP, based on its performance in a beaker cell in aqueous 1M H2SO4, was used as a current collector to enhanced the performance of the GOx electrodes. A graphiti...

ABSTRACTSolar photovoltaic (PV) systems play an important role for electricity production using solar energy. Underdeveloped or developing nations still strive for constant supply of electricity. When fossil fuel is used for electricity generation, it leads to an increase in pollutants and greenhouse gases. This is creating environmental problems. Further global energy demand can be met out by using various solar energy technologies, can also save the earth from global issues and at the same tim...

Abstract Due to the worldwide energy crisis and environmental issues, the so-called green ship is recently urgent to be developed for energy-saving and emission-reduction. When a photovoltaic (PV) system is installed on a ship, solar generation can provide auxiliary energy as backup of engine. However, different from the land-based PV system with fixed position, the marine PV system always suffers from complex and frequently-changed environmental conditions, e.g. the partial and dynamic shading,...

Abstract For maximum power point (MPP) application, the transient evolution of capacitor can be exploited to examine the power-voltage (P-V) characteristics of a photovoltaic (PV) array. This method is simple and inexpensive. In addition, it can be implemented on any array size whether un-shaded or partially shaded. This paper presents a new MPPT technique that scans the P-V curve of PV array with a series capacitor (C scan ) through a unique H-bridge architecture. The proposed technique employs...
