Abstract The application of magnesium alloys to automobiles is increasing due to their superior specific strength and specific stiffness. In this study, an upper sheet of AZ31 magnesium alloy and a lower sheet of cold-rolled steel were joined by self-piercing riveting (SPR), a method commonly used to join automotive panels. A cross-shaped specimen was fabricated with a punching force of 35 kN, which exhibited the best joint strength for the SPR joint specimen geometry. Monotonic and fatigue stre...

Abstract The so-called “Oxide/Metal/Oxide sandwich” method is one of the technique used to investigate the dynamic oxidation of metals which happens during the casting process. In this study, characteristics of the oxide films formed on the molten magnesium in dynamic conditions have been investigated using the aforementioned method. The air bubbles were released into the cast sample at the pressure of 0.2 atm through a quartz tube of 1 mm internal diameter. The interface of two adjacent entrapp...

Abstract Recently, multi-pass caliber rolling has been shown to be effective for Mg alloys. This study investigated the effect of subsequent annealing on the mechanical properties of a caliber-rolled AZ31 Mg alloy to modulate the strength-ductility relationship. This annealing gave rise to different trends in mechanical properties depending on the temperature regime. Low-temperature annealing (T ≤ 473 K) exhibited a typical trade-off relationship, where an increase in annealing temperature resul...

Abstract ZE20 (Mg-2Zn-0.2Ce) 2 is a new wrought magnesium alloy with improved extrudability and mechanical properties [1]. To understand the constitutive behavior and workability of this new alloy, Gleeble thermomechanical testing has been carried out in this study. The flow stress behavior of ZE20 was investigated between 250 °C–450 °C and 10–3 s–1–1.0 s–1 in isothermal compression. Constitutive descriptions of the flow stress are provided. A new general approach at application of the extended ...

Abstract Magnesium alloys are commonly used to produce lightweight parts. While most magnesium alloys exhibit low thermal conductivities, high thermal conductivities are needed for electronic devices. In this study, we attempted to develop new magnesium casting alloys with high thermal conductivities. The Mg Zn Si Ca alloy compositions were chosen using CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) calculations, and alloy samples were prepared. The fluidity and hot-tearing resistance were measured. Th...

Abstract The compressive deformation behavior of the extruded WZ42 (Mg98.5Y1Zn0.5 in at.%) magnesium alloy containing a low amount of long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase was studied by in-situ synchrotron radiation diffraction technique. Tests were conducted at temperatures between room temperature and 350 °C. Detailed microstructure investigation was provided by scanning electron microscopy, particularly the backscattered electron imaging and electron backscatter diffraction technique. Th...

Abstract Magnesium (Mg) metal matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have been developed by powder metallurgy (PM). GNPs with different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt.%), layer thicknesses (5 nm and 9 nm), and particle sizes (15 µm and 5 µm) were dispersed into Mg powder by high-energy ball-milling processes. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated composites were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning ele...

Abstract The aim of this work is firstly to optimize T6 heat-treatment of low-pressure sand-cast Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy, and then systematically investigate the mechanical behavior of the T6-treated alloy from room temperature to 300 °C. It turned out that the optimum T6 heat-treatments for the tested alloy are 525 °C × 12 h + 225 °C × 14 h and 525 °C × 12 h + 250 °C × 12 h which integrated age-hardening and tensile properties into account, respectively. The strength of the T6-treated alloy indi...

Abstract The lead-free dielectric compound Bi(Mg2/3Ta1/3)O3 (BMT) has been synthesized at high temperature by a low-cost solid-state method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique reveals that the fabricated sample has an orthorhombic crystal system. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) image displays the uniform distribution of grains on the surface of the specimen. The dielectric parameters (permittivity (er), and loss tangent (tan δ) are studied over a wide range of temperature (150–500 °C) ...
