Abstract Acoustic travel-time TOMography (ATOM) allows the measurement and reconstruction of air temperature distributions. Due to limiting factors, such as the challenge of travel-time estimation of the early reflections in the room impulse response, which heavily depends on the position of transducers inside the measurement area, ATOM is applied mainly outdoors. To apply ATOM in buildings, this paper presents a numerical solution to optimize the positions of transducers. This optimization avoi...

Abstract This paper focuses on evaluation of differences in the newly manufactured U-tubes and ones after operation. Differences in geometry and internal surface roughness were investigated and a flow simulation was carried out in the Ansys Fluent software, where properties such as flow nature, maximum velocity and pressure drop were examined. A numerical model validation process was carried out with an application of PIV experiments. The digital models of the U-tube were obtained with an applic...

Abstract Generally, the strains at a point must be measured at least in three directions simultaneously in order to find the principal strain. In this paper, a simple device is proposed to visualize the principal strain direction in structure in real-time. Different from the conventional methods, it is able to indicate the principal strain by detecting the largest deformation in the elliptical zone which is deformed from a circular zone. The mechanism and key structure of the device are introduc...

Abstract In order to study the application of ultrasonic Lamb wave in the detection of defective plates, a nonlinear Lamb wave detection system was established. The system was used to detect aluminum alloy plates with different depth cracks and aluminum alloy plates with different tensile load cycles. The acquired time domain waveforms are analyzed by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and the influence of two kinds of defects on the nonlinear effects of Lamb waves is obtained. The test results show ...

Abstract Additively manufactured parts are fabricated by generating complex shapes, allowing almost infinite freedom of design. Such parts present significant measurement challenges related to the accessibility and the quality of the measurement results, due to the presence of hollow features, and freeform geometries. Optical measuring instruments are being increasingly applied for complex form measurement, because, compared to contact measurements, they feature higher speeds, higher point densi...

Abstract The rebar corrosion monitoring using magnetic method is a hot research area and it is necessary to develop effective methods using the rebar’s own magnetic characteristics with considerations of environmental magnetic field. In this paper, the magnetic gradient and partial modulus is proposed for rebar corrosion monitoring. The effectiveness of corrosion monitoring method is discussed on the basis of experimental results from eight rebars and four reinforced concrete beams before and af...

Abstract At present, very few soft actuators have achieved strain and pressure sensing capabilities simultaneously. In this paper, one kind of soft strain and pressure sensors based on liquid conductive metal (EGaIn) are proposed, which can be integrated into typical soft pneumatic actuator easily for sensing functions. Here we report design models, fabrication techniques, sensing characterization and sensation experiments for the potential sensors. Especially for EGaIn-based strain sensors, sen...

Abstract The present paper focuses on evaluation of surface roughness (Ra) in incrementally formed parts by different image processing based methods. For this, twenty-seven parts are formed as per full factorial design in incremental forming by varying three important process parameters over three levels each. The surface roughness of formed parts is measured using Taylor Hobson Talysurf and it is in the range of 0.6–3.6 µm. For image processing based evaluation of surface roughness, five images...
