We use the appeal of simplicity and an aversion to complexity in selecting a method for handling partial functions in logic. We conclude that avoiding the undefined by using underspecification is the preferred choice.

Our knowledge of the immune system and how it interacts with tumor cells continues to grow. With each advance in basic science comes a new opportunity to develop an effective treatment strategy. Many such opportunities have arisen in the past few decades and this chapter has attempted to describe how these new advances have been combined with a variety of undefined cellular antigen preparations in an attempt to develop effective cancer vaccines. None of the strategies described in this ch...

Different OR approaches are explored to discuss how individuals may increase their expertise and overrun community barriers for development. These approaches will be discussed from a perspective of unbounded problems with undefined resources. Traditional descriptions for such kind of problems will be presented (i.e. Arrow's impossibility theorem, Hardin's Commons problem, Axelrod's Prisoners' dilemma) and real projects will be expressed through such challenges, to discuss limitations for ...

Hydrogen solubility in heavy undefined petroleum fractions is estimated by taking as starting point a method of characterization based on functional groups []. Such method provides properties entering into equations of states and molecular pseudostructures formed by non-integer numbers of functional groups. Using Vapor-Liquid Equilibria (VLE) data from binary mixtures of known compounds, interaction parameters between hydrogen and the calculated functional groups were estimated. Besides, ...

Background The family under investigation consists of parents and two daughters, one being the proband. The mother and the proband have elongated facial features. The father and second daughter appear normal. The older daughter presented for elective tonsillectomy aged 8 years. She had severe masseter spasm after suxamethonium. The rest of the procedure was carried out under total intravenous anaesthesia. No blood gas analysis could be done, but a creatine kinase next day was significantly eleva...

A methodology proposed in a previous paper [ Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 51 , 14188-14198] for thermodynamic characterization of undefined petroleum fractions was applied to gas-condensate fluids. Using this methodology, input parameters of cubic equations of state and their mixing rules, critical properties and chemical pseudostructures are determined for undefined fractions by minimizing their Gibbs free energy. The results show the feasibility of applying this approach to gas-condensat...

The term big data has become ubiquitous. Owing to a shared origin between academia, industry and the media there is no single unified definition, and various stakeholders provide diverse and often contradictory definitions. The lack of a consistent definition introduces ambiguity and hampers discourse relating to big data. This short paper attempts to collate the various definitions which have gained some degree of traction and to furnish a clear and concise definition of an otherwise ambiguous ...

Toll-like receptors play important roles in regulating immunity against microbial infections. Toll-like receptor 8 (TLR8) belongs to a subfamily comprising TLR7, TLR8 and TLR9. Human TLR8 mediates anti-viral immunity by recognizing ssRNA viruses, and triggers potent anti-viral and antitumor immune responses upon ligation by synthetic small molecular weight ligands. Interestingly, distinct from human TLR8, mouse TLR8 was not responsive to ligand stimulation in the absence of polyT-oligodeoxynucle...

Falls represent a major care and cost problem to health and social services world-widely, since 50% of falls result in an injury. In this work, is proposed a methodology to evaluate protective pads materials and geometry performance, in order to reduce impact results in a fall event. Since the material properties and the pad geometry are the key factors to make the protection possible when a fall event occurs, our approach relies on the use of mechanical tests to evaluate the properties of the m...
