The organic matter (OM) of soils with andic properties has long been considered highly stable because of the presence of Al-humus complexes and sorption of organic ligands onto amorphous compounds. In this study, we characterized soils under different land use regimes located within an amphibolitic massif close to Santiago de Compostela (Spain), where soils with andic properties are present. Slash and burn agriculture was a common practice in the area until the second half of the 20th century. T...

A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, motile and slightly curved rod-shaped bacterium (BFLP-4T) was isolated from the faeces of wild seahorses ( Hippocampus guttulatus ) captured in northwest Spain (Toralla, Galicia). Strain BFLP-4T grew at 10–35 °C and pH 5–9 (optimally at 20 °C and pH 7.2) and at salt concentrations in the range 0–7% w/v NaCl. The G+C content of the DNA was 49.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain BFLP-4T was a member o...

The Rubian magnesite deposit (West Asturian—Leonese Zone, Iberian Variscan belt) is hosted by a 100-m-thick folded and metamorphosed Lower Cambrian carbonate/siliciclastic metasedimentary sequence—the Candana Limestone Formation. It comprises upper (20-m thickness) and lower (17-m thickness) lens-shaped ore bodies separated by 55 m of slates and micaceous schists. The main (lower) magnesite ore body comprises a package of magnesite beds with dolomite-rich intercalations, sandwiched between slate...

A new method for the determination of dexamethasone (9α-fluoro-11β,17α,21-trihydroxy-16α-methylpregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione) in bovine liver was developed. This new liquid−liquid extraction method comprises the addition of sodium hydroxide to the tissue sample followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. After centrifugation, the extract is evaporated to dryness and the residue dissolved in acetonitrile. The cleaning of the fat is performed with n-hexane, and the acetonitrile layer is evaporated. A...

Observations of cosmic rays arrival directions made with the Pierre Auger Observatory have previously provided evidence of anisotropy at the 99% CL using the correlation of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with objects drawn from the Veron-Cetty Veron catalog. In this paper we report on the use of three catalog independent methods to search for anisotropy. The 2pt-L, 2pt+ and 3pt methods, each giving a different measure of self-clustering in arrival directions, were tested on mock cosmic r...
