This review discusses the current knowledge of the phytochemistry and in vitro and in vivo evaluations carried out using the extracts and, where appropriate, the main active components isolated from the genus Bougainvillea. Out of 18 species, most phytochemical, pharmacological, and toxicological studies focused on four species with different cultivars and one hybrid. Some plants are used for the treatment of various health disorders. Numerous phytochemical investigations of plants in this genus...

Dioscorea bulbifera L. (Chinese: Huangdu, common name: air potato) is a traditional herbal medicine in China, and it is also one of the most widely consumed yam species, especially in West Africa. Studies have verified that D. bulbifera is effective in treating a wide range of diseases, such as pharyngitis, goitre, pyogenic skin infections, orchitis and cancer. However, more and more studies have also reported liver and kidney damage caused by D. bulbifera. To promote understanding of the bioact...

Abstract The consumers' interest in natural preservatives seemed to have increased because of the apathy and negative effect of synthetic preservatives. This study explored the use of Thaumatococcus daniellii leaves as potential preservatives against fungi responsible for the spoilage of orange juice and corn jell-o. The leaves of the plant were extracted with different solvents – acetone, aqueous, ethanol and hexane – and assayed against test fungi using disc diffusion method. The minimum inhib...

ABSTRACTCarbosulfan and carbofuran induce water pollution and health issues. Such issues may be solved by phytoremediation. Here we tested the potential of adding Rumex dentatus L. leaves extract to Plantago major L. for enhancing phytoremediation of carbosulfan-contaminated soil. The phytoremediation efficiency of P. major L. amended with R. dentatus L. leaves extract was significantly greater than that of P. major only and R. dentatus with respect to the removal of carbosulfan from contaminate...

Antifungal effect of aqueous and ethanol extracts of Azadirachta indica on the radial growth of fungal pathogens of stored cocoyam corms and cormels was investigated. Four different extract concentrations were used from the plant leaves. Pathogenicity test showed that: Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Verticilium lateritium, Botrydiplodia theobramae, Colletotricum coccoides, Phythium myriotylum, Fusarium verticillioides, Rhizopus stolonifer and Geotricum candidum induced rot in both var...

Garlic is an important medicinal herb of culinary value by imparting its flavors and odors to the food. Allicin, a notable flavonoid in garlic, is a powerful antibiotic and antifungal compound. Due to poor bioavailability, garlic is of limited use for oral human consumption. Being sexually sterile, propagation of garlic is done by individual cloves from a bulb which increases the chances of transfer of viral diseases. In this chapter, an efficient and improved regeneration protocol for explant e...

The efficacy of ethanol and aqueous extracts of the peels of Dioscorea alata and Dioscorea bulbifera on the growth of pathogenic fungi of rotten white yam (Dioscorea rotundata) were investigated. Pathogenicity test revealed that Sclerotia rolfsii, Botryodiplodia theobromae and Fusarium oxysporum induced rot in healthy white yams after seven days of inoculation with Botryodiplodia theobromae being the most virulent. All the extracts showed varying degrees of antifungal effect, ethanol extract pro...

The effect of Xylopia aethiopica dried fruits (grains of selim) as additive on performance, carcass characteristics and economic prospects in finisher broilers was investigated. One hundred and ninety five (195) finisher broiler chicks (Arbor acres breed) were randomly allocated to five treatments with each treatment having three replicates in a completely randomized design. Properly blended grains of selim was administered through drinking water on treatments 2, 3, 4 and 5 at concentrations of ...
The effect of grains of selim ( Xylopia aethiopica ) as additive on the performance, gut microbes and blood parameters of finisher broilers was investigated. One hundred and ninety five (195) 28 days old broilers (Arbor acres strain) were randomly assigned to five treatment groups with each treatment having three replicates in a completely randomized design. Each treatment group had 39 chicks and 13chicks per replicate. The experiment was done in the Poultry Research Unit of the Department of An...
