Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is chronic inflammation of hepatocytes due to immune cells attacking the patient’s own hepatocytes, histologically characterized by interface hepatitis. The disease can be serious, and if left untreated, it can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and eventual liver failure. It occurs more frequently in females.
