Portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) analyzers are routinely used to generate large elemental datasets in sedimentary strata. These data provide the basis for assessing stratigraphic changes in geochemistry, bulk mineralogy, and paleo-redox conditions.
