Effects of Er3+ concentration on the optical properties of Er3+:SrGdGa3O7 single crystals

Abstract
Abstract High-quality single crystals of different Er3+ concentration doped SrGdGa3O7(SGGO) were grown successfully by the Czochralski method. The absorption, up-conversion, near-infrared and mid-infrared fluorescence spectra, as well as the fluorescence decay curves of Er:4I13/2 and 4I11/2 levels in Er:SGGO crystal were measured at room temperature. As the concentration of Er3+ ions increase, the spectra of Er:SGGO crystals show weaker near-infrared emission and stronger mid-infrared emission. The lifetime of the 4I13/2 state decreases by nearly 7times while the lifetime of the 4I11/2 state decreases by only about 1.3 times in the Er:SGGO crystals. These results indicate that the heavily Er3+ doped SGGO crystals is beneficial to improve the 2.7 μm laser.

We demonstrate a comparative investigation on Er,Pr:GYSGG and GYSGG/Er,Pr:GYSGG composite crystals at 2.79 μm. Simulating results show the highest temperatures are 369 K and 318 K, respectively. We demonstrate a monolithic single frequency Tm-doped fiber amplifier with output power of 51.5 W. A single frequency fiber laser at 1.97 \mathrm {\mu} m is amplified by a cascaded master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system with all-fiber configuration. We demonstrate a diode end-pumped Yb, Er, Ho:Gd1.17Y1.83Sc2Ga3O12 (GYSGG) laser operated at 2.79 μm in continuous-wave mode. Spectral analysis shows that Yb3+ and Ho3+ act as sensitizer and deactivator ions, respectively. The spectra of Er3+:CaGdAlO4 and Pr3+/Er3+:CaGdAlO4 crystals were measured under the same conditions. With the presence of Pr3+ ions, the intensities of the green, red upconversion and near-infrared emissions are dramatically reduced to 1/20, 1/150, and 1/8.5 of those for Er3+:CaGdAlO4. We demonstrate a 30-W all-fiberized laser in a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) structure with a central wavelength of 1 950 nm.
