Abstract A high demand exists in human biomonitoring studies for reliable and straightforward methods that generate data faster and simultaneously. Thus, the present study combines microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for simultaneous extraction and determination of various classes of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including parabens, benzophenones, bisphenols, and the antimicrobial, triclocarban in human urine samples. Optimized MEPS conditions were: i) MEPS sorbent (C18), ii) pH of sample (3), iii) volume of sample (250 μL), iv) number of draws–eject cycles (5) and (vi) desorption solvent conditions (100 μL of CH3OH:H2O 80:20 v/v). The calibration curves were linear over the selected ranges for all studied compound, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.99. The variation coefficient for precision was lower than 20% at lower concentrations and lower than 15% at the higher concentrations studied. The accuracy ranged from 90% to 118%. The proposed strategy affords several advantages over currently published approaches, including simplicity of operation and reduction of sample and solvent volumes and time for matrix clean-up. Moreover, the analytical performance of each MEPS cartridge remained stable over the analysis of at least 70 samples (RSD

Abstract Human exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has received considerable attention over the last three decades. However, little is known about the influence of co-exposure to multiple EDCs on effect-biomarkers such as oxidative stress in Brazilian children. In this study, concentrations of 40 EDCs were determined in urine samples collected from 300 Brazilian children of ages 6–14 years and data were analyzed by advanced data mining techniques. Oxidative DNA damage was evaluated...

Abstract The use of cosmetics in our daily lives has increased globally. Although cosmetics are used for a desired purpose, the presence of certain ingredients that can have potential adverse health effects is a concern. Thus, there is a need for identification and quantification of such chemicals in cosmetics to assess exposure doses as well as the potential health risks to humans and the environment. Human biomonitoring studies provide valuable information on the exposure levels of a wide rang...

A simple and sensitive method for the simultaneous determination of eight parabens in human plasma and urine samples was developed. The samples were preconcentrated using dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction based on the solidification of floating organic drops and determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The influence of variables affecting the extraction efficiency was investigated and optimized using Placket–Burman design and Box–Behnken design. The...

Abstract Exposure of humans to phthalates has received considerable attention due to the ubiquitous occurrence and potential adverse health effects of these chemicals. Nevertheless, little is known about the exposure of the Brazilian population to phthalates. In this study, concentrations of 25 phthalate metabolites were determined in urine samples collected from 300 Brazilian children (6–14 years old). Further, the association between urinary phthalate concentrations and a biomarker of oxidativ...

Abstract This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and use of graphene supported on aminopropyl silica through covalent bonds (Si-G) as a sorbent for microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS). Five parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl and benzyl) present in water matrices were used as model compounds for this evaluation. The Si-G phase was compared to other sorbents used in MEPS (C18 and Strata™-X) and also with graphene supported on primary-secondary amine (PSA) silica, where Si-G s...

Abstract In this study, a novel method combining dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and fast liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed and validated for the extraction and determination of bisphenol A (BPA) and six bisphenol analogues, namely bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol P (BPP), bisphenol Z (BPZ), bisphenol AP (BPAP) and bisphenol AF (BPAF) in human urine samples. Type and volume of extraction and disperser solvents, pH sample, ...

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine and metabolic disruptor commonly employed as a color developer in thermal papers. Consequently, BPA derived from thermal papers has been considered an important source of exposure for humans, since this chemical may migrate from paper to skin upon contact. Further, due to recent restrictions on BPA use in some countries, it has been replaced by a new analogue, bisphenol S (BPS). The aim of the present study was to determine levels of BPA and BPS in 190 different...

Abstract This study describes the use of cork as a new coating for bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE) and its application in determining benzophenone, triclocarban and parabens in aqueous samples by HPLC–DAD. In this study bars with 7.5 and 15 mm of length were used. The extraction and liquid desorption steps for BAμE were optimized employing multivariate and univariate procedures. The desorption time and solvent used for liquid desorption were optimized by univariate and multivariate studies...

Abstract Photocatalysis is a promising approach to remove highly toxic and refractory aromatics pollutants. However, developing highly active photocatalyst is a long-standing challenge for pollutant degradation. This study addressed this challenge by developing GR (graphene)/TiO2 and HPW (H3PW12O40)/GR/TiO2 membranes by sol-gel method. The removal efficiencies of HPW/GR/TiO2 (the doping of 1.0% HPW) membrane for chlorophenols (including o-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, ...

Abstract Presence of bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues in various environmental matrices have been well studied by now, but there is still an insufficient data on the occurrence of BPA analogues in animal-derived foodstuffs. Hence, this work describes a quick, sensitive and reliable analytical method for the simultaneous determination of eight BPA analogues in eggs, applying a solid-phase extraction procedure with PRiME HLB cartridges that combines isolation of the analytes from matrix and the...
