The distribution of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) has been shown to correlate with mean annual air temperature and is increasingly used for paleoclimate reconstructions, in particular in lakes. Numerous studies have reported in situ production of brGDGTs in lakes.
