Thin soft tissue covering extensor tendons make them prone to injury. The extensor mechanism achieves a delicate balance with the flexor system. Inappropriate management in the acute setting can lead to long-term deformity and dysfunction. Acute extensor tendon injuries are usually managed with splinting and/or primary repair of the tendon.
