As first reported by (Naatanen, Gaillard, and Mantysalo 1978, 1980), infrequent (“deviant”) sounds occurring in a sequence of repetitive (“standard”) sounds elicit the mismatch negativity (MMN) event-related brain potential (ERP), even when the listener is instructed to attend to other stimuli.
