Biodegradation of pyrene in soil microcosm by Shewanella sp. ISTPL2, a psychrophilic, alkalophilic and halophilic bacterium
Abstract
The present study demonstrates pyrene degradation by a pshychrophilic bacterial strain, Shewanella sp. ISTPL2 isolated from Pangong lake, Ladakh, India. The ISTPL2 strain showed highest specific growth rate at 500 ppm with 93% extent of degradation. Pyrene metabolic pathway was confirmed from metabolites such as 4,5-dihydroxypyrene, 2-carboxybenzalpyruvate, phthalic acid and salicylic acid obtained from pyrene degradation.
