Background An active surveillance approach has been proposed for patients with a clinically complete response (cCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in esophageal cancer (SANO trial). To justify renouncing surgical resection, patients with residual disease after nCRT should be accurately identified.
