Alanine and aspartate are essential transfer metabolites for C 4 species of the NAD ‐malic enzyme and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase subtype. To some degree both amino acids are also part of the metabolite shuttle in NADP ‐malic enzyme plants.
