Neisseria meningitidis outer membrane vesicles or proteoliposomes (PLs) have been used as vaccines and adjuvants. Despite the presence of potentially toxic amounts of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), they have been shown to be safe, well tolerated, and immunogenic.
