MRI can visualise and depict bone marrow oedema, which is known to be a strong independent predictor for radiographic progression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).1 2 Recent advances in dual-energy CT have enabled the direct visualisation of traumatic bone marrow oedema with high sensitivity and specificity through implementation of virtual non-calcium (VNCa) images.3–7
