Unileaflet mitral valve is the rarest of the congenital mitral valve anomalies and is usually life threatening in infancy due to severe mitral regurgitation (MR). In most asymptomatic individuals, it is mostly due to hypoplastic posterior mitral leaflet. We present a 22-year-old male with palpitations, who was found to have an echocardiogram revealing an elongated anterior mitral valve leaflet with severely hypoplastic posterior mitral valve leaflet appearing as a unileaflet mitral valve without...

A 76-year-old male with a pacemaker presented with acute pulmonary oedema requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed a partially flail anterior mitral leaflet, severe mitral regurgitation (MR), and pulmonary hypertension, not present on previous TTEs. Transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) demonstrated an elongated anterior mitral valve leaflet (AMVL) with a flail A2 …

We describe a case of a 66-year-old woman with severe mitral regurgitation secondary to posterior leaflet atresia of the mitral valve. Perioperative transesophageal echocardiography suggested the possibility of an absent posterior leaflet with complete prolapse of the anterior leaflet. We questioned the functional outcome if repair was attempted; therefore, mitral valve replacement was performed. We present a case outlining the successful management of this rare condition in an adult as well as ...

Congenital mitral valve regurgitation is a rare disease that is found in infancy and childhood, and sometimes in elderly people. In the case presented, mitral regurgitation that was tolerated well until the sixth decade of life is reported. A 62-year-old male suffering from dyspnea was referred to our hospital. Transthoracic echocardiographic examination demonstrated severe mitral regurgitation with suspicion of agenesis of the posterior leaflet with a long, mobile anterior leaflet. A transesoph...

Congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of mitral valves is a very rare condition. It is sometimes seen together with other congenital anomalies. We present a demonstrative case of posterior mitral leaflet hypoplasia seen together with congenital lungs anomaly.

An asymptomatic 47-year-old man who has pectus carinatum, strabismus, and ptosis was referred for a systolic murmur. On transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), posterior mitral leaflet was not seen. Left ventricular free wall had replaced it and was coapting with the anterior leaflet ( Panel A ; see Supplementary data online, Video S1 ). The anterior leaflet and chordal structures were elongated. The anterior leaflet was found to be prolapsing into the left atrium during systole. Systolic …
