Abstract
Aims
Fasting blood tests (FBTs) are unnecessary and potentially dangerous in children. They may lead to hypoglycaemia and collapse, or delayed diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and even precipitate a more severe presentation of DKA. It is also dangerous to fast a child with suspected diabetes insipidus. Reasons for GP referrals for FBTs were reviewed.Methods
