Abstract
Abstract Miniaturizing potentiostats, keeping their cost low and yet preserving full measurement characteristics (e.g. bandwidth, determination of capacitive/inductive contribution to sensor's impedance and parallel screening) is still an unresolved challenge in bioelectronics. In this work, the combination of simple analogue circuitry together with powerful microcontrollers and a digital filter implementation is presented as an alternative to complex and incomplete architectures reported in the literature. A low-cost acquisition electronic system fully integrated with a biosensors platform containing eight gold working microelectrodes and integrated reference and counter electrodes was developed and validated. The manufacturing cost of the prototype was kept below 300 USD. The performance of the proposed device was benchmarked against a commercial impedance analyzer through the electrochemical analysis of a highly sensitive biosensor for the detection of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) within the randomly chosen range of 266 pg/mL to 666 ng/mL in physiological medium (PBS). A strong correlation between the outputs of both devices was found in a critical range of frequencies (1–10 Hz), and several TNF-α cytokine concentrations were properly discriminated. These results are very promising for the development of low-cost, portable and miniaturized electrochemical systems for point-of-care and environmental diagnosis.

Abstract In the last decades, the possibility to assess physiological states, monitor disease onset and progression, as well as monitor post-treatment therapeutic outcomes through a non-invasive approach became one of the most desirable goals for healthcare research. In this respect, saliva analysis can represent a very interesting biological matrix which has high potential for the surveillance of general health and disease. Potentially important biomarkers are increased in saliva during local a...

Interleuldn-1b (IL-1b) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) biomarkers are one of many antigens that are secreted in acute stages of inflammation after left ventricle assisted device (LVAD) implantation for patients suffering from heart failure (HF). In the present study, we have developed a fully integrated electrochemical biosensor platform for cytokine detection at minute concentrations. Using eight gold working microelectrodes (WEs) the design will increase the sensitivity of detection, decrease the t...

Lateral flow biosensors are a leading technology in point-of-care diagnostics due to their simplicity, rapidness and low cost. Their primacy in this arena continues through technological breakthroughs such as multiplexing: the detection of more than one biomarker in a single assay. Multiplexing capacity is critical for improving diagnostic efficiency, enhancing the diagnostic precision for specific diseases and reducing diagnostic cost. Here we review, for the first time, the various types and s...

We report on a simple method to manufacture an electrochemical micro lab-on-chip (μLoC), for the detection of interleukin-10 (IL-10) cytokine of patients suffering from heart failure (HF). To monitor the critical levels of inflammation, a μLoC containing eight gold microelectrodes based on a polyimide (PI) substrate was fabricated. The microelectrodes were manufactured on PI by a combination of soft lithographical tools. To produce an operational μLoC, a microfluidic system fabricated in polydim...

To explore the possibility of achieving a rapid and in situ detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a portable biosensing instrument consisting of an impedance detector and a 3D-printed USB-compatible sensor chip was developed. In this study, we proposed an electrochemical biosensor based on screen-printed interdigitated microelectrodes (SPIMs) and a portable detector to achieve low-cost, highly selective and sensitive detection of AFB1 in rice. Under optimized conditions, the immunosensor provided a ...

Abstract Proteins play crucial roles in biological activities and show close relationship with human diseases as biomarkers. Thus, rapid, sensitive, selective, and portable detection of protein is in high demand for point-of-care (POC) testing. Here, a smartphone-controlled biosensor system is developed with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to detect proteins for POC testing. The system was constituted by miniaturized biosensor, hand-held EIS detector, and smartphone, collectively. P...

Abstract In this paper we studied the performance of bioanodes under different experimental conditions using polarization curves and impedance spectroscopy. We have identified that the large capacitances of up to 1 mF·cm − 2 for graphite anodes have their origin in the nature of the carbonaceous electrode, rather than the microbial culture. In some cases, the separate contributions of charge transfer and diffusion resistance were clearly visible, while in other cases their contribution was maske...
