Controlling the accuracy and precision of sulfur and lead isotopic compositions in natural sulfide minerals requires the use of well-characterized reference materials with matrices similar to those of the unknown samples being analyzed. However, it is often a challenge to prepare natural or synthetic reference materials with homogeneous isotope compositions on a micro-scale. Herein, we report a novel method to synthesize homogeneous sulfide reference materials in the form of nano-particulate pressed sulfide powder tablets (PSPTs). Non-matrix-matched external calibration was used to obtain accurate and precise lead isotopic ratios, while mass bias was corrected using a standard-sample bracketing method and a thallium standard solution doping process. In situ analysis of lead isotopic ratios of PSPTs using laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) yielded good external precisions of <0.026% for 207,208Pb/206Pb and <0.057% for 206,207,208Pb/204Pb (2RSD). Meanwhile, the standard deviations of results afforded by LA-MC-ICP-MS were better than 0.41‰ for 34S/32S (2SD). The in situ analytical results of PSPTs were consistent with the values obtained using solution nebulizer MC-ICP-MS, thus demonstrating the reliability and robustness of our analytical protocol. This method can also be used to synthesize different material matrices with homogeneous sulfur and lead isotopes to correct mass bias when using standard-sample bracketing for in situ analysis.

Abstract The North Kostobe gold deposit in the Kalba gold province, eastern Kazakhstan, is tectonically located in the Chara shear zone of the western Altaids. The Chara shear zone separates the Kazakhstan microcontinent and Siberia craton which collided in the late Carboniferous. In the North Kostobe deposit, Au mineralization is distributed along an E-W striking shear zone linked to the NW-SE trending regional faults, and is mainly concentrated in quartz-sulfide-carbonate veins or in dissemina...

This study reports a detailed evaluation of how key parameters of operation influence the measurement of sulfur isotopes using laser ablation multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). Sulfur isotopes are observed to display a fractionation up to 2‰ δ34S during analysis of pyrite with different laser parameters using a 193 nm ArF excimer laser. In order to understand why the laser parameters affect S isotope fractionation when measuring S isotopes in pyrite, ...

We prepared a series of pressed powder tablets and chalcopyrite glass standards to correct mass bias when using standard–sample bracketing for in situ sulfur isotope measurements. A femtosecond laser ablation coupled multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fsLA-MC-ICP-MS) method was used to determine the sulfur isotope composition of these standards. Chalcopyrite glass (YN411-m) was prepared by quickly quenching the fused chalcopyrite, which was melted at 1000 °C under a pr...

Abstract In situ Pb isotope data of sulfide samples measured by LA-MC-ICP-MS provide valuable geochemical information for studies of the origin and evolution of ore deposits. However, the severe isobaric interference of 204 Hg on 204 Pb and the lack of matrix-matched sulfide reference materials limit the precision of Pb isotopic analyses for Hg-rich sulfides. In this study, we observe that Hg forms vapor and can be completely removed from sample aerosol particles produced by laser ablation using...

Abstract In this study, lead isotopic ratios in bronze artifacts were non-matrix-matched determined directly by femtosecond laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fsLA-MC-ICP-MS). We evaluated the necessity of matrix matching for lead isotope ratio analyses of bronzes by adopting thallium solution to correct mass discrimination during mass spectrometer measurements. Lead isotope ratios of four bronze reference materials were measured by fsLA-MC-ICP-MS to det...

Abstract The sulfur isotope is an important geochemical tracer in diverse fields of geosciences. In this study, the effects of three different cone combinations with the addition of N 2 on the performance of in situ S isotope analyses were investigated in detail. The signal intensities of S isotopes were improved by a factor of 2.3 and 3.6 using the X skimmer cone combined with the standard sample cone or the Jet sample cone, respectively, compared with the standard arrangement (H skimmer cone c...

Abstract Isotope ratio measurements using a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS) commonly use standard-sample bracketing with a single isotope standard for mass bias correction for elements with narrow-range isotope systems measured by MC-ICP-MS, e.g. Cu, Fe, Zn, and Hg. However, sulfur (S) isotopic composition (δ 34 S) in nature can range from at least − 40 to + 40‰, potentially exceeding the ability of standard-sample bracketing using a single sulfur isotope...

Abstract The Yunnan–Guizhou–Guangxi “golden triangle” is considered as one of the important regions for Carlin-type (or Carlin-like) gold deposits in China. Gold deposits in this region can be grouped into lode type controlled by faults and layer-like type controlled by host strata. Arsenopyrite is one of the major gold-bearing minerals in these deposits. Here we report the S and Pb isotopic composition of arsenopyrites from the fault-controlled Lannigou and Jinya gold deposits and the stratabou...

Abstract The Eastern Qinling ore belt is the second largest Au province in China and is estimated to contain more than 1300 metric tons of Au. Most of the gold deposits in the belt are vein-type (fracture-hosted Au). Whether they are of metamorphic origin or magmatic-hydrothermal origin is controversial. The Qiyugou Au orefield developed granite-hosted Au, breccia pipe-hosted Au, and fracture-hosted Au, and the present study investigates these three types of gold mineralization. New zircon U–Pb ...
