BACKGROUND: At global level, there are 37 million people infected with HIV and 115 million people with antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV). Little is known about the extent of HIV-HCV co-infection. We sought to characterise the epidemiology and burden of HCV co-infection in people living with HIV. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis we searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL+, POPLINE, Africa-wide Information, Global Health, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library and WHO databases ...

Abstract This work examines organic impurity profiles of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) that has been synthesised from the “pre-precursors” catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene) and eugenol, via a safrole intermediate. MDMA was synthesised from the catechol- and eugenol-derived safrole intermediate via two routes, which resulted in the synthesis of MDMA from catechol via two routes (Route 1A and 1B) and from eugenol via two routes (Route 2A and 2B). Twelve organic impurities were identified ...

Abstract Illicit drugs and their metabolites represent a new class of emerging contaminants. These substances are continuously discharged into wastewater which have been detected in the aquatic environment in concentrations ranging from ng.L−1 to μg.L−1. Our study detected the occurrence of cocaine (COC) and benzoylecgonine (BE) in a subtropical coastal zone (Santos Bay, SP, Brazil) within one year. Water samples (surface and bottom) were collected from the Santos Submarine Sewage Outfall (SSOS)...

Abstract This study has as main objective assessing the toxicity of crack-cocaine combined with different scenarios of ocean acidification on fertilization rate and embryo-larval development of Echinometra lucunter sea urchin. Effects on early life stages were assessed at five different concentrations (6,25 mg.L −1 ; 12,5 mg.L −1 ; 25 mg.L −1 ; 50 mg.L −1 and 100 mg.L −1 ) of crack-cocaine at four different pH values (8.5; 8.0; 7.5; 7.0). The pH values were achieved using two different methodolo...

Background The TAPS Tool is a substance use screening and brief assessment instrument that was developed for use in primary care medical settings. It is one of the first screening instruments to provide rapid assessment of all commonly used substance classes, including illicit and prescription opioids, and is one of the only available screeners designed and validated in an electronic self-administered format (myTAPS). This secondary analysis of data from the TAPS Tool validation study describes ...

Globally, prisoners tend to come from marginalised and socially disadvantaged sections of society and exhibit a high incidence of ill-health, linked to social exclusion and multiple complex needs. Prisons therefore offer an important opportunity to tackle inequality and injustice, through promoting health, reducing re-offending and facilitating community reintegration. This paper reports on and critically discusses findings from an evaluative research study, which aimed to identify and explore i...

Pharmaceuticals and drugs of abuse including novel psychoactive substances (NPS) are emerging as newer contaminants in the aquatic environment. The presence of such pollutants has implications on the environment as well as public health and therefore their identification is important when monitoring water quality. This research presents a new method for the simultaneous detection of 20 drugs of abuse and pharmaceuticals in drinking water, including 15 NPS, three traditional illicit drugs and two...

Abstract Objective Colombia is facing a rising epidemic of intravenous heroin use. Knowledge of the methadone-assisted treatment programmes in the country is crucial in order to propose improvement strategies. Methods 13 programmes from priority regions were surveyed. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients attending the programmes, a description of the services offered, their methadone treatment protocols, the various barriers to treatment and the causes of treatment abando...

Abstract Ketamine is a dissociative anaesthetic agent whose recreational use amongst adolescents and young adults is reaching epidemic proportions in a number of countries. While animal studies have examined the long-term detrimental effects of early-life ketamine exposure, there is a paucity of information on the immediate effects of ketamine following subchronic administration in the adolescence period. Adolescent rats were assigned into four groups of 10 animals each, administered intraperito...
