A dynamic interconnection of PV modules based on an irradiance equalization algorithm in grid-connected systems based on a plant oriented configuration is presented. The maximum output power at the PV generator level obtained with approach is similar to that obtained in the module integrated configuration

An accurate PV module electrical model is presented based on the Shockley diode equation. The simple model has a photo-current current source, a single diode junction and a series resistance, and includes temperature dependences. The method of parameter extraction and model evaluation in Matlab is demonstrated for a typical 60W solar panel. This model is used to investigate the variation of maximum power point with temperature and isolation levels. A comparison of buck versus boost maximum power...

As a short introduction on the general development and forecast of world market in photovoltaics (PV) are presented. The general classification introduces grid connected, stand alone, large scale and roof-top PV-systems. The core of presentation concentrates on the development and trends of converters for grid connected PV-systems. The novel multi-string converter is introduced representing one of the major trends in PV system technology towards modular PV-system design based on string converter...

Photovoltaic systems which employ solar panels to generate electricity from sun's energy produce no green house effect and are almost pollution free. But one of the drawback of the system is in its efficiency of conversion. At present the achievable efficiency is approximately 30%. To improve the conversion efficiency, semiconductor materials with suitable band gap is used. The cost of the solar panels depends on their efficiency. The efficiency of conversion also reduces due to faults in the so...

In the case of partial shadowing or photovoltaic (PV) module failure, the power provided by photovoltaic solar array significantly decreases. A promising technique to mitigate these power losses is based on the dynamic reconfiguration of the electrical connections between the PV modules. This article proposes a reconfigurable PV architecture based on Total-Cross-Tied (TCT) configuration and improved irradiance equalization (IrEq) algorithm. The PV architecture with the proposed optimization algo...

Abstract The paper presents a complete technique, based on the combination of algorithms, devoted to minimize losses and increase efficiency of Total Cross Tied (TCT) connected photovoltaic (PV) systems under non-homogeneous solar irradiation, based on irradiance equalization criterion. Irradiance equalization is achieved by changing the connections of the solar panels adaptively by a dynamic switching matrix so that total solar radiation on parallel circuits is the most equalized. In this paper...

The high-intensity laser power beaming (HILPB) system is one of the most promising systems in the long-range wireless power transfer field. In the HILPB system, the conversion efficiency at the photovoltaic (PV) receiver will limit the performance of an implemented system. One of the major factors that contribute to the reduction of PV power is Gaussian laser beam. Different PV configurations can be used to reduce the losses caused by Gaussian laser beam. In this paper, an optimal PV array confi...

Abstract This paper proposes an Energy Modulation strategy (MODEN) which allows the PV inverters efficiency to be incremented in low input power condition. The key element is the utilization of an ultracapacitors bank as energy regulation transitory element: in low irradiance condition, the energy coming from the PV array is not converted immediately, but temporary stored to be converted at a power regime in which the inverter may have maximum yield. In this paper the simulator developed, the gu...

As more utility scale photovoltaic (PV) power plants are installed, there is a need to improve monitoring and management of PV arrays. A procedure is presented here for optimizing the electrical configuration of a PV array under a variety of operating conditions. Computer simulations and analysis with synthetic and real data are presented in this paper. The performance of the optimization system is evaluated for a variety of partial shading conditions using a SPICE circuit simulator. In general,...

Abstract In this paper, an original formulation of the control problem for optimal PV array reconfiguration, following a Total Cross Tied layout, is proposed. The formulation follows the well-known subset sum problem, which is a special case of the knapsack problem. The reconfiguration is a measure devoted to mitigate the mismatch effect and maximize the output power of small photovoltaic plants under non-homogeneous working conditions. Therefore, reconfiguration means changing the connections o...

Electrical mismatch between modules in a PV array due to partial shading causes energy losses beyond the shaded module. This occurs because unshaded modules are forced to operate away from their maximum power point in order to compensate for the shading. Here we present an irradiance estimation algorithm for use in a mismatch mitigation system. Irradiance is estimated using measurements of module voltage, current, and back surface temperature. These estimates may be used to optimize an array's e...

In order to reduce the mismatch effect caused by non-uniform shadows in PV arrays, reconfigurable interconnections approaches have been recently proposed in the literature. These systems usually require the knowledge of the solar radiation affecting every solar module. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of three irradiance estimation approaches in order to define which can be well suited for reconfigurable PV arrays. It is presented a real-time solar irradiance estimation devi...
