Abstract
Objective of this study is to analyze preoperative concerns of patients suffering from spinal degenerative disease in a Chinese population. A total of 94 patients with spinal degenerative disease were included, and they were divided into four groups: male and female group, older (≥60 year-old) and younger group (<60 year-old). Questionnaire was designed through patients counseling, preliminary formulation, pilot test and final revision. Each...

Prospective. To assess whether patients with poorer emotional health before fusion surgery will have worse pain and function after surgery, and to identify patient variables that predict fusion outcomes.A systematic review of fusion outcomes studies reported an average of 68% "satisfactory" outcomes. The persistence of pain and functional limitations leads to emotional and financial costs. Therefore, it is important to identify the factors that affect fusion outcome. Research has explored psychos...

In the last several years, the lateral transpsoas approach to the thoracic and lumbar spine, also known as extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) or direct lateral interbody fusion (DLIF), has become an increasingly common method to achieve fusion. Several recent large series describe several advantages to this approach, including less tissue dissection, smaller incisions, decreased operative time, blood loss, shorter hospital stay, reduced postoperative pain, enhanced fusion rates, and the abi...

The optimum timing of lumbar discectomy for sciatica is imprecise. We have investigated a number of prognostic factors in relation to the outcome of radiculopathy after lumbar discectomy. We recruited 113 consecutive patients of whom 103 (91%) were followed up at one year. We found a significant association between the duration of radiculopathy and the changes in the Oswestry Disability Index score (p = 0.005) and the low back outcome score (p = 0.03). Improvement in pain was independent of all ...

Standard consent forms result in highly variable communication between patients and physicians. To enhance the consent process and facilitate shared decision making, we developed a World Wide Web-based program, PREDICT (Patient Refined Expectations for Deciding Invasive Cardiac Treatments), to systematically embed patient-specific estimates of death, bleeding, and restenosis into individualized percutaneous coronary intervention informed consent documents. We then compared patients' experiences ...

To evaluate anxiety and depression as prognostic factors for radicular and back pain after surgery in patients with lumbar disc herniation in a 1-year follow-up study.A total of 108 patients with lumbar disc herniation were enrolled in the study. Anxiety was assessed by State and Trait Anxiety Inventory; current depression was assessed by Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. Severity of pain was scored on the visual analog scale (VAS). The State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, Zung Self-Rating Depres...
Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS) has become increasingly common and is characterized by multilevel disc herniation and lumbar spondylolisthesis, which are difficult to treat. The current study aimed to evaluate the short-term clinical outcomes and value of the combined use of microendoscopic discectomy (MED) and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) for the treatment of multilevel DLSS with spondylolisthesis, and to compare the combination with traditional...
The emergency department (ED) provides an arena for patient enrollment into a variety of research studies even for non-critically ill patients. Given the types of illness, time constraints and sense of urgency that exists in the ED environment, concern exists about whether research subjects in the ED can provide full consent for participation. We sought to identify enrolled research subjects' perspectives on the informed consent process for research conducted in the ED.This was a prospective, ob...

Background Patients considering surgery face many uncertainties and concerns. This investigation aimed to develop an objective assessment tool for characterizing the areas of greatest concern among patients considering endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Methods As part of validating a clinical measure concerning perioperative concerns, patients presenting with chronic rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyposis were voluntarily recruited. A total of 30 individuals completed a novel 19‐item quest...
Previous studies have confirmed the benefits and limitations of the presacral retroperitoneal approach for L5-S1 interbody fusion. The purpose of this study was to determine the safety and effectiveness of the minimally invasive axial lumbar interbody approach (AxiaLIF) for L4-S1 fusion. In this retrospective series, 52 patients from four clinical sites underwent L4-S1 interbody fusion with the AxiaLIF two-level system with minimum 2-year clinical and radiographic follow-up (range: 24-51 months)....
