I read an article dealing with CT diagnosis of acute appendicitis in the Finnish Medical Journal. The authors referred to a paper by Rogers et al ,1 stating that ‘The benefit of universal imaging (prior to surgery) is to avoid 12 unnecessary appendectomies but the cost of those 12 avoided surgeries is one cancer death due to imaging’.
