Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of a thyroid nodule was performed in 797 patients. Ninety-six patients had resection of the thyroid nodule performed subsequent to a one-time FNA biopsy. The surgical pathology of these 96 cases demonstrated a 5.8% false-negative rate and a 9.9% false-positive rate. As a consequence, we prospectively evaluated the routine practice of repeat FNA of cytologically benign thyroid nodules. Repeat FNA confirmed the original benign cytology in 183 (93%) of 196 patien...

The utility of fine needle aspiration (FNA) and physical examination for selecting patients with palpable thyroid nodules for surgery was evaluated in 795 consecutive cases. Surgery was performed in 216 patients based upon the cytological diagnosis and clinical criteria. Excluding 42 patients who were lost to follow-up, the remaining 537 were regularly followed up (range, 2–10 years). Cytological findings were classified as malignant, histologic control recommended (suspicious), follicular tumor...

The increased sensitivity of many imaging modalities (ultrasound, computed to mography scan, magnetic resonance imaging) has resulted in the identification of thyroid nodules, measuring 1 cm or less. Usually these small lesions are regarded as incidental and are not sampled by fine-needle aspiration (FNA). However, some of these lesionsundergo FNA because of suspicious radiology findings (multifocality, calcification, etc) or in patients with a history of radiation to the head and neck region. W...

Objective: To assess the accuracy of ultrasonography and cytology in predicting malignancy in thyroid nodules. Design: Prospective open study. Setting: Thyroid centre, Japan. Subjects: 329 nodules in 309 patients examined by a new ultrasound scanner and ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Interventions: Comparison of ultrasonographic, cytological, and combined diagnosis with the histological diagnosis. Main outcome measures: Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of each diagnostic ...
