Abstract
The melanocortin system plays vital roles with regard to maintaining homeostasis. The endogenous melanotropin peptides (α-, β-, γ-melanocyte stimulating hormones (MSH) are derived from the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) preprohormone gene.
