Abstract
Bacteria that oxidize methylated amines are ubiquitous in the sea. The likely source of these C1 substrates is the quaternary ammonium osmoprotectant, glycine betaine, which degrades to release trimethylamine (TMA), dimethylamine (DMA), and monomethylamine (MMA).
