So far no members of the group of coordination compounds in which PCl3 acts as a donor molecule have been investigated crystallographically, although many such compounds are known to exist. We have studied the structure of a relatively simple representative of this group, AuCl·PCl3. Univalent gold is always found to have a linear coordination, even when the analogous copper and silver complexes show a tetrahedral coordination of the metal atom. AuCl·PCl3 is no exception and also shows a linear c...

The anti-inflammatory agent sodium aurothiomalate appears to act upon mononuclear phagocytes, inhibiting their lysosomal enzyme activity. Evidence is presented that gold salts can increase the number of lung tumour nodules that develop following intravenous injection of tumour cells and pretreatment can enhance the take of a subcutaneous tumour inoculum. In contrast, they do not affect the later growth of tumour. Gold salts can also suppress the action of systemically administered C. parvum in i...

Abstract A series of spin labels has been employed to explore the environment of the sulfhydryl group in bovine plasma albumin. The spin labels consist of the nitroxide-free radical and a maleimide (or iodoacetamide)-attaching group separated by varying chain lengths. Both sets of spin labels preferentially bind to the sulfhydryl group under appropriate conditions. From the change in the electron spin resonance spectra of these nitroxides as a function of chain length, we conclude that the sulfh...

The title complexes [(4) Au(dmp)Cl3 and (5) Au(dmp)Br3, dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline] have been synthesised and their crystal and molecular structures determined from three-dimensional X-ray data obtained by counter methods. Crystals of (4) and (5) are not isomorphous though both are monoclinic, space group P21/C, with Z= 4 in unit cells of dimensions: (4)a= 7.343(1), b= 18.712(3), c= 12.143(3)A, β= 112.29(2)°;(5), a= 8.046(1), b= 10.478(3), c= 20.079(5)A, β= 92.65(2)°. The three-dimensional structure of carbonic anhydrase B (EC 4,2,1,1; carbonate hydro-lyase) from human erythrocytes has been determined to high resolution. Parallel and antiparallel pleated sheet makes up the predominant secondary structure of the enzyme. The tertiary structure is unique for its folding and is very similar to the structure is unique for its folding and is very similar to the structure of the isoenzyme, human erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase C. The essential metal ion, zinc, is fir...

Large single crystals of AuCl were prepared by a vapour-transport method. AuCl is tetragonal, a = 6.734, c = 8.674 A, space group 141/amd, Z = 8. The structure consists of zig-zag chains of Au and Cl; Au is linearly coordinated by Cl at distances of 2.36 A, the bond angles Au-Cl-Au are 92 °.

A series of cationic, dihydroimidazolinium-functionalized 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophores have been isolated as their hexafluorophosphate salts, [HL]PF6. These pro-ligands react with [AuCl(tht)] in the presence of base to form N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes, [AuCl(L)]. Two X-ray structures represent a pro-ligand and complex pairing: the latter reveals the two-coordinate linear geometry of the NHC–Au(I) species, as well as intermolecular interactions supported by both ligand π–π stacking a...

Mendeleev’s periodic table of 63 elements, now extended to 118 elements, provides a basis for asking rational questions about which elements are essential for human life and which can be used in the design of medicines. However, the extent of such knowledge is relatively poor, and greatly in need of further investigation. We describe how the periodic table has inspired our curiosity about inorganic chemistry in the human body (and other organisms), about genetically encoded natural selection of ...

Colloidal nanoparticles are being intensely pursued in current nanoscience research. Nanochemists are often frustrated by the well-known fact that no two nanoparticles are the same, which precludes the deep understanding of many fundamental properties of colloidal nanoparticles in which the total structures (core plus surface) must be known. Therefore, controlling nanoparticles with atomic precision and solving their total structures have long been major dreams for nanochemists. Recently, these ...

A range of fluorescent alkynyl-naphthalimide fluorophores has been synthesized and their photophysical properties examined. The fluorescent ligands are based upon a 4-substituted 1,8-naphthalimide core and incorporate structural variations (at the 4-position) to tune the amphiphilic character: chloro (L1), 4-[2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol] (L2), 4-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethylamino] (L3), piperidine (L4), morpholine (L5), 4-methylpiperidine (L6), and 4-piperidone ethylene ketal (L7) variants. In order to understand the launching in 1966 of Structure and Bonding, it is necessary to appreciate the factors which contributed to the emergence of inorganic chemistry as an equal branch of chemistry. A variety of social and economic factors contributed to the transformation of inorganic chemistry from an essentially descriptive subject into an intellectual equal of organic and physical chemistry. The aims and distinctive features of Structure and Bonding are identified with reference to the ...

The fascinating biological activity of gold coordination compounds has led to the development of a wide range of complexes. The precise biological action of such species is often poorly understood and the ability to map gold distribution in cellular environments is key. This article discusses the recent progress in luminescent Au(I) complexes whilst considering their utility in bioimaging and therapeutics.
