Abstract
Commercial geranium oil samples, steam-distilled oils of authenticated plant samples, and a reference sample were investigated by GC/MS to determine the validity and applicability of a series of chemical and stereochemical tests that have been proposed in the literature to identify the country of origin, phytochemical identity or authenticity of geranium oils. The chemical tests evaluated include the ratio of the concentrations of geraniol to citronellol and the presence or absence of certain sesquiterpenes, viz ., (-)- guaia-6,9-diene and (-)-10- epi--eudesmol. The stereochemical tests include the stereochemical distribution of i) citronellol, ii) menthone and isomenthone, and iii) rose oxides. The most reliable chemical test was the presence or absence of the sesquiterpene probes. The stereochemical tests proved to be less reliable. Most of the tests could be used to classify geranium oils into general types; however, none of the tests provided a foolproof method to distinguish cultivars or country of origin. During this study, the ambiguity in the absolute stereochemistry of (-)-10-epi-- eudesmol and (-)-guaia-6,9-diene was addressed, and these two sesquiterpenes could serve as effective markers for the authentication of P. graveolens essential oils.

Abstract The aim of this study was to analyse the chemical composition of essential oil of rose-scented geranium ( Pelargonium graveolens L.) growing in Algeria and to test the efficacy of the oil against food spoilage and food-borne pathogens. The chemical composition of the oil was analysed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS). A total of 45 compounds representing 94.2% of the essential oil were identified. The main constituents were citronellol (30.2%), citronellyl formate (9.3%) a...

Abstract The present paper undertakes the study of the essential oils (EO) composition and trichomes distribution, morphology and anatomy of the aerial organs of Pelargonium graveolens L’Her. which is an aromatic and medicinal species originating from Sfax (Tunisia). In fact, three morphologically distinct types of trichomes which are non-glandular trichomes, capitates glandular trichomes and peltate ones were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Besides, t...

Pelargonium graveolens (Geraniaceae) was characterized with respect to its chemical composition, antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activities. This is the first investigation focusing on the comparison of both essential oil and polar extracts from this species. The chemical composition of the essential oil of the aerial parts of P. graveolens was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The main constituents of the oil were found to be β-citronellol (21.9%), citronellyl formate (1...

Chemical fingerprinting of commercial Pelargonium capitatum (Geraniaceae) essential oil samples of south African origin was performed by GC, GC/MS, and 13C- and 1H-NMR. Thirty-seven compounds were identified, among which citronellol (32.71%) and geraniol (19.58%) were the most abundant. NMR Spectra of characteristic chemicals were provided. Broad-spectrum bioactivity properties of the oil were evaluated and compared with those of commercial Thymus vulgaris essential oil with the aim to obtain a ...

Abstract The essential oil components of geranium oil cultivated in center of Iran were identified and determined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry data combined with the chemometric resolution techniques. A total of 61 components accounting for 91.51% were identified using similarity searches between the mass spectra and MS database. This number was extended to 85 components using chemometric techniques. Various chemometric methods such as morphological scores, simplified Borgen method...

A plethora of information is available on the essential oil composition of commercially grown Pelargoniums namely P. capitatum, P. graveolens and P. radens and their hybrids, while only a few chemical investigations have been carried out on the other aromatic Pelargonium species indigenous to South Africa. The hydrodistilled leaf oils of 13 South African Pelargonium species of the genus Pelargonium (family Geraniaceae) were analyzed by means of GC and GC/MS and a total of 315 compounds were iden...

The rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium sp.) cultivar ‘Kelkar’, grown in the agroclimatic conditions of the western Himalayas, was processed by various hydrodistillation methods, which revealed that water distillation of the herb gave a higher oil yield (0.16–0.22%) than the water–steam distillation (0.09–0.12%) and steam distillation methods (0.06–0.18%). The samples were analysed by GC and GC–MS to study and compare the essential oil compositions which revealed that the oil distilled by the wat...
