Aim Biogeographically puzzling taxa represent an opportunity to understand the processes that have shaped current species distributions. The systematic placement and biogeographical history of Elkalyce cogina , a small lycaenid butterfly endemic to Brazil and neighbouring Argentina, are long‐standing puzzles.
