Abstract
Content and distribution of glycogen in relation to the gametogenic cycle of a natural population of Ruditapes decussatus (L., 1758) located in the Baldaio lagoons (Galicia, northwestern Spain) Bivalve reproduction is associated with complex cycles of energy reserve storage. We studied the gametogenic cycle of the clam Ruditapes decussatus (L., 1758), as well as variations in its glycogen composition, using individuals from a natural population located in the Baldaio lagoons (Galicia, northwestern Spain). The gametogenic cycle, as well as variations in glycogen composition, were studied throughout the life cycle of the clam Ruditapes decussatus (L., 1758), using individuals from a natural population located in the Baldaio lagoons (Galicia, northwestern Spain). The gametogenesis begins in December and January, after a period of sexual inactivity during the months of November and December. This population reaches sexual maturity during a period extending from mid-May until August, and spawning takes place from June to August, followed by a post-spawning period. To study of glycogen content and its distribution, the clams were dissected out into different parts: foot, ledge of the mantle, gills, adductor muscle and gonad-digestive gland. The

Abstract Populations of the Manila clam, Tapes philippinarum (Adams & Reeve, 1850), were maintained at temperatures of 12, 15, 18, and 21°C for a period of 19 weeks. Regular determinations were made of ammonia excretion rate following which animals were sacrificed for estimation of dry meat weight, dry shell weight, biochemical composition, and gonadal development. T. philippinarum increased from an initial dry meat weight of 291.5 mg to final values of 957.9, 733.0, 735.0, and 586.0 mg at 12, 1...

Eight batches of hatchery reared V. decussata were reared to market size at two sites in England and one in Wales. The mortality rate varied between 10 and 40% per year in different populations with an average of 23% per year. The growth rates were rather similar at the three sites and it was estimated that after 3 years a population planted at 10 mm shell length would have reached about 50 mm. Calculations on the yield of market sized animals showed that at the average mortality rate it would b...

Abstract The bivalve Donax vittatus (da Costa) occurs in Kames Bay, Millport, Scotland, only intermittantly. Successful settlements may occur with a frequency of no more than two in twenty years. There was one such settlement in the summer of 1962. The distribution in 1967 of survivors from this settlement was mainly just below L.W.S.T. Shell ring measurements indicated that the maximum mean size was reached in 5–6 years. Seasonal changes in body weight and biochemical composition are associated ...

Markers of oxidative stress and biochemical composition were investigated in digestive gland and gonad tissues in the freshwater mussel Diplodon chilensis, as well as morphometric variables in relation to chronological age and sex. Individual growth followed a von Bertalanffy growth model (VBGM). Superoxide dismutase activity, glutathione level and oxidative damage to proteins remain constant through the life of both tissues, whereas catalase and glutathione-S-transferase activities and lipid pe...

ABSTRACT The reproductive cycle of the cockle Cerastoderma edule was studied by histological techniques and observation of changes in the condition index during three consecutive years in the Ria de Vigo (Northwest Iberian Peninsula). The onset of gametogenesis took place at the end of the summer (September to October), progressed throughout the winter, and the mature stage was finally reached in spring. The first spawning occurred in April and May and, after gonad restoration, another spawning ...
