Abstract
An introduction to mathematical models of pattern formation by morphogen gradients is presented, using the early embryo of the fruit fly Drosophila as the main experimental example. Analysis of morphogen gradient formation is based onthesource‐diffusion‐degradationmodelsandaformalismoflocalaccumulation times.
