Photoluminescences and 1D chain-like structures with dinuclear lanthanide(III) units featuring bipyridine-tetracarboxylate

Abstract
Four isostructural lanthanide(III) complexes, [Ln 2 (HL) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] n ·2nH 2 O (H 4 L = 3,3′,6,6′-tetracarboxyl-2,2′-bipyridine) (Sm ( 1 ), Eu ( 2 ), Gd ( 3 ), Tb ( 4 )), have been synthesized under the hydrothermal condition and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffractions, powder X-ray diffractions (PXRD), thermal analyses (TGA) and elemental analyses (EA). These four complexes all exhibit 1D chain-like structures containing di-nuclear lanthanide(III) units, which are further linked by hydrogen bonding into 3D supramolecules. To further investigate the properties of the above complexes, the photoluminescent properties of 2 and 4 are also discussed.

The synthesis and the molecular and photophysical characterization, together with solid state and solution structure analysis, of a series of europium complexes based on β-diketonate ligands are reported. We have prepared complexes of formula [Eu(β-diketonate)3(DPEPO)] and shown quantitative excited-state energy transfer from the ligands combined with efficient Ln luminescence leading to exceptionally-high total photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 80% in solution and in PMMA.

A new complex of 4-thiophen-3-yl-pyridine-2,6-bis(oxazoline) with Eu(III) triflate has been isolated. This complex and its Tb(III) analogue are luminescent in the solid state. The complexes dissolve with partial retention of the solid-state structure in acetonitrile to yield highly luminescent solutions with quantum yields of 76.2 and 58.6% for red and green emission, respectively.
