Abstract
Abstract Wheat is a staple food crop in the world as well as in China. Because of the progress of wheat breeding and other agricultural scitechnologies, the wheat grain yield per unit area has increased more than five folds from 1952 to 2006 in China. The first part of this article briefly reviews the history of wheat breeding in China. Second, the establishment of “ Triticum aestivum-Agropyron ” distant hybridization system and its contribution to wheat production and breeding in China are summarized. Finally, the future challenges of wheat breeding are discussed, which include how to increase the utilization efficiencies of water, soil nutrient and light energy through breeding. As an example, our research progress on how to increase light use efficiency in wheat through breeding is introduced and discussed.

Abstract Photosynthesis and its tolerance to photoinhibition, high temperature and drought stress of flag leaves were investigated in a wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) hybridization line (1-12) and its parents (Jing-411 and Xiaoyan-54). From the beginning of flowering to the 10th day, light-saturated CO 2 assimilation rate ( P max ) showed no significant decrease and P max of 1-12 was comparable to that of its parents. From the 20th day, P max decreased significantly and this decrease was much les...

The arid areas in China are mainly located in North China and Northwest China. The North China is the main region for food production. There is 31.19% of the total farmland and 26.01% of the total population, but only 6.14% of the available water resources of China. Groundwater is over pumped (6.53×109m3 every year) in the regions of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Province, so water supply could not meet the water demand there. The distribution of water in Northwest China is uneven, some inland riv...

Fifty-six bread wheat cultivars and advanced lines from major Chinese wheat growing regions and 10 Australian cultivars were grown in Anyang located in Yellow and Huai Valleys and Chengdu located in Yangtze region. The genotypes were examined for their suitability to produce northern style Chinese steamed bread (CSB) and used to investigate the association between wheat quality traits and performance of northern style CSB under manual and mechanized processing conditions. Anyang-sown wheat sampl...

China is a big country with a huge population and limited farmland area per capita. To produce enough food for feeding the population is of vital importance for the county. A huge achievement in food production since 1949 has been made. The regression analysis in each period of 10 years shows that there is a significant positive linear correlation between the annual food production and annual chemical fertilizer N (CF-N) consumption throughout 1949–1998. However, the regression coefficient, b, i...

: The high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) components from about 85 varieties were fractionated by SDS-PAGE, including 22 corner stone breeding parents, 45 varieties taking important role in Chinese wheat production and 18 varieties with good bread making quality. The 22 corner stone breeding lines carry either null (c) or l(a) summits on Glu-Al loci. Five types are detected on Glu-Bl, which are 7 + 8(b), 7 + 9 (c), 14 + 15 (h), 17 + 18 (i), 6 + 8 (d). 7 + 8 and 7 + 9 are the two majo...

The photodamage processes of PSⅠ particles isolated from two wheat cultivars "Jing 411" and "Xiaoyan 54" were studied by comparing the difference in spectroscopic properties. It was found that high light intensity caused the damage of pigments in PSⅡ, especially Chl a molecules with maximum absorption at 683 nm is very sensitive to high light. The change in fluorescence spectra revealed that photodamage also led to the damage of the process of energy transfer in PSⅠ. In the PSⅠ particles "Xiaoya...

Changes in the efficiency of the primary light energy conversion, fluorescence quenching parameters and contents of photosynthetic pigments were compared between two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes in response to high light stress. The contents of chlorophyll and carotenoid in "Jing-41l" were slightly higher than those in "Xiaoyan-54". Under high Light stress, photoinhibition as indicated by a sustained decrease in PS II photochemical efficiency was more pronounced in "Jing-411" than in "...

BACKGROUND: Psathyrostachys huashanica Keng (2n = 2x = 14, NsNs) carries many outstanding agronomic traits, therefore is a valuable resource for wheat genetic improvement. Wheat-P. huashanica translocation lines are important intermediate materials for wheat breeding and studying the functions of alien chromosomes. However, powdery mildew resistance in these translocation lines has not been reported previously. RESULTS: This study developed a novel wheat-P. huashanica translocation line TR77 by ...

If genetic gains in wheat yield are to be achieved in today’s breeding, increasing the genetic variability of cultivated genotypes is an essential requisite to meet. To this aim, alien gene transfer through chromosome engineering (CE) is a validated and sound strategy. Attempts to incorporate more than one alien segment into cultivated wheat have been rare, particularly for tetraploid durum wheat. Here, we present the agronomic and quality performance of the first successful CE-mediated multiple...

Distant hybridizations are important for developing common wheat germplasm. Thinopyrum ponticum (2n = 10x = 70), which is a wild relative of wheat, has numerous advantages for enhancing the tolerance of plants to biotic and abiotic stresses. ES-11 and ES-12 are two stable lines derived from a cross between the Triticum aestivum–Th. ponticum partial amphiploid line Xiaoyan784 (2n = 8x = 56) and the wheat Abbondanza nullisomic lines (2n = 40) involving consecutive self-crosses and cytological mark...

In order to explore the association of long-term high light (HL) with leaf senescence in wheat, two wheat genotypes Xiaoyan 54 (HL-tolerant) and Jing 411 (HL-sensitive) grown in low light were subjected to HL for 2-8 d. The results showed that 6-8 d of HL led to dramatic decline of chlorophyll content, photochemical efficiency, and activity of Rubisco and antioxidant enzymes. Meanwhile, the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), soluble proteins, soluble sugars, superoxide anion, and ascorbic acid in...

Amphidiploids generated by distant hybridization are commonly used as genetic bridge to transfer desirable genes from wild wheat species into cultivated wheat. This method is typically used to enhance the resistance of wheat to biotic or abiotic stresses, and to increase crop yield and quality. Tetraploid Thinopyrum elongatum exhibits strong adaptability, resistance to stripe rust and Fusarium head blight, and tolerance to salt, drought, and cold. In the present study, we produced hybrid derivat...

Abstract Wheatgrasses ( Thinopyrum spp.), which are relatives of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.), have a perennial growth habit and offer resistance to a diversity of biotic and abiotic stresses, making them useful in wheat improvement. Many of these desirable traits from Thinopyrum spp. have been used to develop wheat cultivars by introgression breeding. The perennial growth habit of wheatgrasses inherits as a complex quantitative trait that is controlled by many unknown genes. Previous studies h...
