Abstract Objective α -Glucosidase inhibitors can be used as a new class of antidiabetic drug. By competitively inhibiting glycosidase activity, these inhibitors help to prevent the fast breakdown of sugars and thereby control the blood sugar level. This study provides a wealth of information about α -glucosidase inhibitors isolated from medicinal plants; this knowledge will be useful in finding more potent antidiabetic candidates from the natural resources for the clinical development of antidiabetic therapeutics. Results 411 compounds exhibiting α -glucosidase inhibitory activity were summarized and isolated them from medicinal plants. The compound classes isolated include: terpenes (61) from 14 genus, alkaloids (37) from 11 genus, quinines (49) from 4 genus, flavonoids (103) from 24 genus, phenols (37) from 9 genus, phenylpropanoids (73) from 20 genus, sterides (8) from 5 genus, and other types of compounds (43). Conclusion Compounds with α -glucosidase inhibitory activity are abundant in nature and can be obtained from several sources. They have high α -glucosidase inhibitory potential, and can be clinically developed for treating diabetes mellitus.

AbstractPlectranthus madagascariensis is used as a traditional medicine in Southern Africa. In search of compounds and activities supporting the medicinal use, the chemical profile of the methanolic extract was studied by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). Four major constituents were isolated and identified as rosmarinic acid (1), 7β,6β-dihydroxyroyleanone (2), 7β-acetoxy-6β-hydroxyroyleanone (3) and coleon U quinone (4). The two abietane diterpenoids ...

α-Glucosidase inhibitors (AGIs) represent a class of oral antidiabetic drugs that delay the absorption of ingested carbohydrates, reducing the postprandial glucose and insulin peaks to reach normoglycaemia. In this study, a bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Achillea fragrantissima (Forssk.) Sch. Bip. growing in Egypt led to the isolation of a new potent AGI; acacetin-6-C-(6″-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranoside)-8-C-α-l-arabinopyranoside (5) alongside with four ...

Abstract A practical approach to control glycemia in diabetes is to use plant natural products that delay hydrolysis of complex sugars and promote the diminution of the release of glucosyl units into the blood plasma. Polyphenolics have been described as being effective in inhibiting amylases and α-glucosidases. Grape pomace is an important sub product of the wine industry, still rich in many compounds such as polyphenolics. In this context, the purpose of this study was to search for possible e...

Abstract Cytinus hypocistis whole plant and its three different parts (petals, stalks, and nectar) were chemically characterised and their biological properties evaluated. A total of 17 phenolic compounds were identified, being galloyl-bis-HHDP-glucose the most abundant. All the tested extracts showed high antioxidant capacity, with the petals exhibiting the most promising results both in the OxHLIA (IC50 = 0.279 ng/mL) and TBARS (IC50 = 0.342 ng/mL) assays. For the antidiabetic and anti-tyrosin...
