Dynamic power efficiency improvement for PWM class-D amplifier
Abstract
This paper presents the technique to dynamically enhance the power efficiency of PWM class-D amplifier over a wide range of modulation indexes. The power stage of amplifier is segmented into several small stages and selectively enabled according to the power demand (i.e. modulation indexes). The capability of power delivery is dynamically adjusted to minimize the power loss in case of different modulation indexes improving the power efficiency,...

A Class D amplifier comprises a pulse width modulator and an output stage. In this paper we analyze the power dissipation mechanisms and derive the overall power efficiency of the output stage realized using the finger and waffle layouts. We compare the relative merits of these layouts; we propose two design methodologies to determine the aspect ratios of the transistors in the output stage for optimum power efficiency (optimum for a given fabrication process, supply voltage and load resistance)...

The architecture, design, and implementation of two clock-free analog class D audio power amplifiers using 0.5 ¿m CMOS standard technology are introduced. The amplifiers are designed to consume significantly less power than former implementations. Both designs operate with a 2.7 V single voltage supply and deliver a maximum output power of 250 mW into an 8 ¿ speaker. The two class-D amplifiers are based on a hysteretic sliding mode controller, which avoids the complex task of generating the high...

In this work, we propose an enhanced design method for filterless class-D audio amplifier based on multilevel architecture. The multilevel technique consists of a multilevel converter and a time division adder followed by modulator. In this method, the modulated signal is arranged into several time divisions and then be integrated into a binary numeric. After that, the binary numeric is encoded to be a set of parallel control signal for multilevel converter. The multilevel converter will deliver...
