Abstract
On a small half‐acre island at the southern end of New Zealand a study was made of a complete community of Sooty Shearwaters from the end of 1940 to the beginning of 1957. In the season 1953–54, when the greatest emphasis was put on an estimate of the population, 551 marked birds were known to have been alive. This indicated a population of around 600 adult birds.
