To determine the association between cigarette smoking and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus.We studied 21,068 US male physicians aged 40 to 84 years in the Physicians' Health Study who were initially free of diagnosed diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
