Red tide phytoplankton Chattonella marina is known to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide anion (O(2)(-)), hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and hydroxyl radical (&z.rad;OH), under normal physiological conditions.
