Abstract
Intelligent systems and communication technologies have experienced huge advances in the last few years. AAL can benefit from mixing both research fields. This article presents an intelligent communication architecture for AAL. It uses artificial intelligence to process the information gathered from several types of communication (e.g., wireless sensor networks, wireless ad hoc networks, wireless mesh networks) over any type of communication technologies (e.g., deviceto- device, machine-to-machine, sensor-actuator), know what is happening in the network, and detect if elderly people need assistance. The article shows the main intelligent algorithms included in the AAL system and the developed software application. Several real measurements validate the operation of our proposal.

In this paper an automated video based real-time surveillance system is presented. This system is based on an omnidirectional camera and a multiple object tracking technique for applications in the field of AAL (Ambient Assisted Living). This system is able to monitor a complete room with a single camera and, in addition, to track the people entering and leaving this room. The software was implemented for an embedded platform which acts as a smart sensor.

The kitchen environment is one of the scenarios in the home where users can benefit from Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications. Moreover, it is the place where old people suffer from most domestic injuries. This paper presents a novel design, implementation and assessment of a Smart Kitchen which provides Ambient Assisted Living services; a smart environment that increases elderly and disabled people's autonomy in their kitchen-related activities through context and user awareness, appropri...

Ambient assisted living (AAL) is advocated as the technological solution that will enable the elderly population to maintain their independence for a longer period of time than would otherwise be the case. The inherently heterogeneous nature of AmI environments and special requirements of the elderly population pose new challenges for the design and implementation of AAL systems. Thus, the development of these systems demands a context-aware, open, scalable, and distributed software technology t...

The number of appliances at home is increasing continuously, mainly because they make our lives easier. Currently, technology is integrated in all objects of our daily life. TCP/IP let us monitor our home in real time and check ubiquitously if something is happening at home. Bearing in mind this idea, we have developed a low-cost system, which can be used in any type of electrical household appliance that takes information from the appliance and posts the information to the Twitter Social networ...

Due to the changing demographics, residing and being cared in the own familiar environment is becoming the more attractive alternative for an ever increasing portion of the population in contrast to an institutionalized inpatient setting. Despite its tremendous market potential, AAL (Ambient Assisted Living) is still on the cusp of a mainstream break-through. A lack of viable business models is considered almost unanimously to be the greatest market obstacle to a broad implementation of innovati...

One of the greatest challenges in Ambient Assisted Living is to design health smart homes that anticipate the needs of its inhabitant while maintaining their safety and comfort. It is thus essential to ease the interaction with the smart home through systems that naturally react to voice command using microphones rather than tactile interfaces. However, efficient audio analysis in such noisy environment is a challenging task. In this paper, a real-time audio analysis system, the AuditHIS system,...

Though the facts motivating the need for AAL are indisputable, the inherently heterogeneous nature and requirements of the elderly population raise significant difficulties. One particular challenge is that of designing AAL systems that can evolve to meet the requirements of individuals as their needs and cir...

Continuous monitoring of frail individuals for detecting dangerous situations during their daily living at home can be a powerful tool towards their inclusion in the society by allowing living independently while safely. To this goal we developed a pose recognition system tailored to disabled students living in college dorms and based on skeleton tracking through four Kinect One devices independently recording the inhabitant with different viewpoints, while preserving the individual’s privacy. Inertial sensors are commonly embedded in several devices, including smartphones, and other specific devices. This type of sensors may be used for different purposes, including the recognition of different diseases. Several studies are focused on the use of accelerometer signals for the automatic recognition of different diseases, and it may empower the different treatments with the use of less invasive and painful techniques for patients. This paper aims to provide a systematic review of the st...

Ambient assisted living plays a vital role in assisting the elderly people. There will be a significant amount of rise in the population of the elderly people in the future. Elderly people must need an assistance to enrich their lifestyle. To provide such an opportunity, human activity recognition (HAR) will be of great use. Monitoring day to day activities are essential to assist independent elders. In this paper, we have collected a dataset of 5 daily activities using accelerometer and gyrosco...

Various smart services and technologies have been developed to support older adults’ wellness, make their daily tasks easier and enhance their overall quality of life. Typically, older adults desire to continue staying in their own residences but are unwilling to make significant home modifications. However, when people grow older, they inevitably experience a significant decrease in their physical, cognitive, and sensory capabilities, which makes them develop negative attitudes towards technolo...

According to the WHO(World Health Organization) and UNSD(United Nations Statistics Division) definition, when the percentage of elderly people (65 years of age or older) in the population exceeds 7%, it becomes an “aging society”, if it exceeds 14%, it becomes an “aged society”, and if it exceeds 21%, it becomes a “super-aged society”. Some developed countries are becoming super-aged societies. In a super-aged society, there are various problems in medical services for health management. To solv...
