CCAAT enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP)beta, C/EBPalpha, and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)gamma act in a cascade where C/EBPbeta activates expression of C/EBPalpha and PPARgamma, which then function as pleiotropic activators of genes that produce the adipocyte phenotype.
